Am I missing out on something by not using trading traffic techniques?

It seems many other websites in my same market(flash arcades;)) trade traffic. They do this by putting up small thumbnails, usually animated gifs, which when a user click on one will take them to a different arcade. Your site is then put into the pool for when a user clicks on a similar thumbnail on a different site.

Here is an example of one of these: ([IMG])

It seems that almost EVERY arcade out there uses this strategy. I just don't see HOW it can possibly be beneficial to yourself. It appears that you only get back what you put in, "trading" traffic.

I have built my website and for the past few months operated without using this tactic, but am I missing out? Can someone explain how this could be helpful at all?
