Am I getting burned of 800$?

I just did work for a client a few months ago which is worth around 400$ , this client is new and seems trusting but after awhile I started to worry if I'll ever get paid that amount.

He told me (after weeks due of payment) he will double the amount after about a week more of waiting, so I waited and asked again and was then told to wait a week more. This kept going on and on for about 2 months now.

He is still contacting me, even if I'm not he still does and keeps promising to pay up the next week. I'm supposed to get paid today after he made a promise last week then yesterday I received an email from him telling me he will pay up next week instead.

This is becoming tiresome but I do appreciate that he still contacts me voluntarily but I'm not sure if I ever will get my money. My question here is: Is this some delaying tactic and I'll never get my cash?

Have you ever been burned before? Is this payment behavior familiar to you? ever get paid when clients started to delay you like this?

Sounds like he has no intention at all of paying you.

Agreed, it sounds like they are messing you around. Is the guy from the same country as you? I would try and get in contact with him off-line if he is. This is the reason contracts are such a nice thing to have, stops people doing this rubbish.

Don't give him anything you created, until he pays you & don't work more for him!

Yes i did get burned of $350 earlier. The modus operandi was exactly the same among these cheats. They keep contacting you till you get irritated and does not contact him. At some point of time, s/he will say that you do not know how to handle your clients and stuff and will not pay.

EDIT : Even if the client is from same city of yours, there is nothing written that he will pay you unless you met him personally.

Do you know where the guy is located? Easiest thing to do is send someone round! ;)

There are alot of Shady money collectors that will do the job for you for a 50% commission. So at least you would get your original $400.

you are more than likely have to use this as a learning experience. He/she has no intention of paying up. Why not on next project stipulate in project agreement a "Pay Upon Performance" clause. this could possible ensure you some form of payment as work is performed.

I worked on the project remotely on his server so it's basically delivered already :(

This is very damaging for me, I mean all those days of work for nothing and I work full-time in freelancing and by the hour....

You've most likely been burned. This is a common tactic to string you along. It keeps you on hand just in case anything needs tweaked or fixed and you are kept hanging waiting for your cash so you will probably do some extra work in the hope of getting paid but it'll never happen. If you still have access to the server go in and remove everything you did (keep a local backup in case he finally coughs up the cash).

Before you start the project should probably get a 20% deposit, so if they back out at least you made something

Sounds like your work is good or else they would
Not even be contacting you to advise of payment
Arrangements. They may have money problems and
They have indicated they will pay you additional
Money for waiting. You have waited this long what
Does it hurt to wait longer? Do not do any new
Work until paid on old. In the future always try and
Keep a controlling ace in the hole.
    Happy Networking,
    Karl

Give him an ultimatum, And tell him you're ready to file a complaint with the local police office if he doesn't pay you. (Might scare him into paying you). You can bluff about it, as the police can't do anything.
