I have a BLOG which I post magic tricks which I copied from posts from various people from a site and I usually put credit if there's any. Am I violating copyright legalities? Personally I don't think so because the posts are from various people and most of their tricks are not their own. But just to make sure. Please help me out.
I would be careful giving copyright advice -- different countries (and even different states within the U.S.) have different copyright laws. That being said, copyright in the U.S. in my state (Illinois) has some areas where you can freely copy for fair use: in quoting, in parody, and in research. If you take someone's idea and reword it, though, you are usually ok. For example, if you can significantly change the wording and how you say things, you can always say "adapted from [source]" and re-use it. If you're quoting a small portion, you can also quote your source. If you are really concerned, you'd better contact a lawyer. I'm assuming you're doing the copying for commercial purposes (ie, in order to make money). If you're earning money on the exact wording of other people, you could be liable for copyright infringement. Luckily, this is a civil penalty and not criminal, but with recent lawsuits being flung around the Internet, I'm very careful myself when I write blogs. On all my blogs I spend a good amount of time making sure that nothing I write (off the top of my head) might have been something I heard about months earlier.
