okay so heres what i did, and i am placing 1st for lot of keywords on my tube site. basically the tube site, is not at all SEO optimized. I just ignored all the basic rules. i didn't understand it. only the url is clean like http://www.google.com/dramatic-gopher-video i just traded links like crazy. and viola! it appears for a few keywords, 1st rank. it seems like backlinking is all there is to it ? how can i get thousands of backlinks.

amerigohosting suggested some good strategies. To really be successful you will want to use several good strategies on a regular basis. If you get all your links from one strategy you stand the chance of losing your rankings if Google decides to devalue those kinds of links. If it were me I would get in the habit of regularly submitting articles, participating in forums and commenting on blogs. Also try some other strategies and try to figure out what works best for your website. What works best for one website may not be the best strategy for another website. You need to experiment and try different things. One other word of advice: make sure you keep varying your link anchor text. If you build up too many links with the same anchor text it looks spammy and unnatural. You may get penalized if this situation occurs.
Backlinking is not all there is to it. You need to have a plan for your traffic. But links pointing to your site with your keywords is the way you get the most benefit out of organic SEO.
