I want to target the 'ebooks' keyword on my home page and then build all other sub pages on the first level (ie. www.myebooks.com/golf-ebooks.html) am I going about this wrong? I don't understand why everyone is so afraid to target the big most popular keywords? these are the ones with the most visibility and popularity. If I am able to get a page rank of 5 or 6 on the home page, then theoretically my sub pages (ie. www.myebooks.com/golf-ebooks.html) would get a page rank of 4 or 5. So what do I have to lose? I understand the benefit of targeting long tail keywords, but to target them as a main keyword for the home page is maybe a mistake since you are focusing on a low traffic individual keyword. Instead why not just attack the main root keyword as home page and then build all long tail keywords on first level pages that branch off the home page ? thoughts ?
I think that's a good plan, you're targeting your main keyword with the domain and going after secondary keywords with the sub-pages. Just take it from the ground up and it'll probably work better.... start going after the long long tails first (such as... golf training ebook comparisson)and then start moving up on the competitiveness list... through smaller phrases such as .... golf training ebook... then golf ebook... and so on. I think it works much better that way than trying to go for the main keywords right off the bat. This is especially true for crowded big niches such as the one you're working at. The only way you can work yourself into such a market is from the ground's up!
