Am I bidding against myself?...Similar Ad Groups with difference being match type

    Hi,

First post :). I have many Ad Groups focusing on certain keywords for each Product Campaign I run. And then, for each Ad Group that focuses on a certain keyword, I have a Phrase Match Ad Group and a Modified Broad Match Ad Group. If I have both of them running, will I be bidding against myself?

    For an example:

    Campaign: Shoes
    Ad Group 1: Tennis Shoes_ModifiedBroad
    Ad Group 2: Tennis Shoes_Phrase

If I run them both, will my CPC go up substantially?

    Thanks

This depends on how you setup the modifier on the keywords, but most of the time it will bid against yourself. I think if you are going to do this they should be in the same ad group.

You don't need to split each match type into their own separate group. In fact, I don't see any advantage of doing this (well, very little advantage). You just end up with more groups to manage.

As for if you're bidding against yourself, no. Only one of the groups would show your ad at any one time. Even having different match types in different groups would still trigger ads on the best match the system finds. The priority is exact, phrase, modified broad and finally broad.

CPC would be calculated in the exact same way. That is, your CTR is compared to that of competitors for each keyword and ad. Even though the keywords are the same but in different match types, the system makes its calculations as if every word is an exact match. This means the same keyword in different matches have the same starting point (mean CTR for QS calculation is the same). That's why a keyword in different types in same group all have the same QS.

So short answer is no. You are not competing against yourself.
