Am I a bad mother?

My 6 year old had a bad bike accident the other night. We were at a friends house. She lives on a hill with a long black top driveway. What kid can resist that combo?

I did hesitate about letting him go and talked about it with a friend of mine (OK, perhaps he wasn't the best choice for a consult as he had a brain injury last year) who was on the scene. But in the end we let him go.

First run down he tries to stop near bottom of hill and then loses control. Three loosened teeth, 8 stitches in gash in chin, and numerous scrapes on elbows, knees, and face. He looks a sight.

He has been getting steadily more daring with stunts on his bike in recent weeks and I'd said more than once that he was destined for a big crash. But this was a doozy!

    So, am I bad mother?

It depends if you learn from this or not. Everyone makes mistakes, it's a matter if you can correct them in the future.

Your son will recover if hes human lol.. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time.. People should learn from there mistakes, and if your son didn't learn anything he is yet to in the near future.. It is what all kids do, so your not a bad mother.. Just make sure your son doesn't get hurt any worse.. Just make sure hes waring knee pads and helmet and stuff.. I`m pretty sure your not a bad mother though!

    - Regards

Nah, we all make mistakes in judgment now and again.

As moms we strive to teach our children and not hold them too tightly so they learn to think and try things on their own. Taking risks is a good thing, we all need to do it now and again to be successful and to grow as people.

He knows now that mom's make mistakes too and has learned that some risks aren't worth it. Luckily he wasn't hurt worse but think of all he knows now!

You CAN get really hurt doing stunts on a bike
Just because something looks like fun doesn't mean it is
helmets are a GOOD THING (I presume he was wearing one)
    Moms aren't perfect
You always need to think of the worst possible outcome of a situation before deciding to try it.

    just to name a few.

Hope he's feeling better and healed up soon

You didn't use your common sense. You did have a bad feeling before you let him do his adventure, right? I would choke it up as lesson learn - and lean to use your intuition.. he's just a kid and kids are daredevils.

Sorry to hear that he's got hurt and my prayer go out to him.

intuition -A sense of something not evident or deducible; an impression.

How are you a bad mother if your kid can't use the brakes?

Sometimes, you just have to let them take their knocks since it is the only way they will learn.

Well, you did what all mums do, worry :) I would say that's fine, your kid sounds like he has some spirit if he still wants to do it, then he's learnt his lesson, most kids wouldn't want to ride again for a while after an accident like that

Could he be the next Matt Hoffman?

dawggone friend, let him hurt himself, so he can be strong and he can have her own personality.
He must make everything alone, so you can be a nice mother.

You can't stop him, he will go and do his stunts if you agree or not, you must however make sure he wear protective gear.

If the hill was overly dangerous then maybe you should have reconsidered but it sounds like you took that into consideration.

Now, it would have been bad of you to throw a broom handle in his spokes but to let him go and learn for himself is not bad.

Better he learn in a 'controlled' enviroment such as this vs. a decision he might make that would put him in harms way, where perhaps he could get hit by a car or something worse than just a nasty wipeout.

past is gone, just ensure to take more care of him in future, kids are generally smart, but now nothing can be done if things went wrong, people sometimes come across accidents at home too
