Can a directory survive and profit without having paid links? Is this possible? The first thing that would come to mind would be CPM ads but I am not sure if that would cover the costs, let alone be profitable. Costs would be: Domain - average $7 a year Hosting - average $1 per month/per site Extra $25 for script or whatever What do you guys think
Conversion rates from PPC ads like adsense are horrible for directories. I don't think you can even break even using those ads to cover the cost of hosting.
You are absolutely right! If you have free directory(PR4) you can earn a maximum of $5 from it from using Adsense which would not be enough to cover the costs Go for programs like TNX.net or sell links on your directory on your own! that would generate some source of revenue for you
Yea I wasn't planning on using adsense I was thinking CPM ads so that the users wouldn't need to click on ads. I suppose selling text links would I was just thinking =) lol.
We are talking general directories here.....right? PPC/Affiliates would be useful on a niche directory where more average web users are visiting to browse. A general directory can make money from people paying for faster or standard review of their site. I made money from releasing sponsored themes which brought income from sponsors and from people paying for footer removal.
Yea I was talking about general directories but you have a good point niche directories do well with ppc programs.
