Hi there, I'm having a problem with my alt tags. All of my images have a general statement for the alt tag "provided by the leading suppliers of Property Maintenance in Burnley" and I don't want this, I want to set up my own alt tags for each of these images, which I have done but they keep getting replaced by this same message. Does anyone know of any solutions for this? I would really appreciate it, thanks in advance.
Hi Jordan, Do you happen to know what CMS you are using? Also it is best practices and helpful to both searcher and the search engines alike to have unique ALT tags for each image, they can be a variation of the chosen title. You will probably want to limit your alt tags to approximately 65 characters in length, if you want to add more information about an image you can add a description tag to the images as well, so that if you are to hover you mouse over that image it will display both title and description…
What is CMS? and I change the alt tags on the image but then when I hover over them on the actual site is just shows the one that I mentioned which isn't what I want. The designer of the site had done this and I'm not sure how to change it and I can't contact him in order to ask him about it.
It is the Content Management System, basically it is the backend of your website where you can add a new page or post, upload the content, images, etc.
Perfect, in that case when you are logged into your wordpress CMS, you can either select a page that has an image on it or go to the media files individually.... however let's start with the image on the page. Go to the content on that page if the image is placed within the content then hover over the image and select one of the two options, one will let you resize the image and the other will give you the ability to add a Title, an ALT Tag and description, if the image is on the right hand side of the page (not within the content) then double click that image and a box will open giving you the options you are after. Alternatively if you go to the Media files and click on the images you want to change the ALT of, simply scroll down the page, you will have the option to fill in a Caption, Alternative Text (ALT) and a description, if not then I recommend you download from your Plugins area Yoast SEO, if you haven't got it on the site already, this is one of the best SEO tools to aid the optimisation of your website which helps with keyword rankings within the search engines. There is a great article about the SEO process here: http://www.spaceandtime.co.uk/seo-why-you-use-an-expert-for-search-engine-optimisation/ which will help you immensely with the next steps to in improving your website…
Thanks for your help, I already have Yoast SEO installed on the site and I have already added the alt tags on the images, but it's still showing the same alt tag when I hover over the images :/
Try refreshing your browser, either clear the entire history, cache... or initially press the "Ctrl" and "F5" buttons and take a look again, or try looking from a different browser. If this does not work take a look for another plugin called W3C Cache which will help clear the old cached information on your website so it displays all of the new information.
I've refreshed my cache, tried it on a different browser and tried it on a different computer but none of these seem to have fixed it. I've tried to search for W3C Cache on WordPress but it's not showing it to download. I think it might be something to do with the script?
It is possible that your web developer hard coded this into the site, it could even be a bugging issue with a plugin conflicting with the template/theme. Or you may not have full administrative access to amend these aspects of the website. it will be worth while speaking to the developer next and then working backwards from that.
I can't contact the developer that is the issue :/ is there anyway that I could remove the code that he applied so that I can see the alt tags that I've set?
Personally if you do not know much about coding I would avoid making those changes yourself it isn't always straight forward and if hard coded you will need access the (S)FTP login to your website as this is where all of the main code files for your website will be held. If you were not supplied with that login then you possibly won't be able to change it. Just out of curiosity do you have more than one SEO plugin on your site??
I have all the logins to the site and for the FTP, I have done a bit of work in FTP myself but not that much. Yeah I have a few plugins but all of them are essential such as Yoast SEO, Revolution Slider etc.
