Alt tags - accurate or not?

Just noticed a site of mine with zero alt tags on it. So, the menu at the top says Home, Products, Services etc. These are graphical images.

Can I put an alt tag text of say "Data Recovery" under the Products image or should it really be "Products"? Just wondered how the search engines view this nowadays and what common practice is.

The SE cannot read an image [and I cannot see a reason why it should]...therefore it uses the alt tag to describe the image. So whatever you use will become the text....and they DO use that strongly!

You should always design your site to make it easier for the human reader. If you use incorrect tags then it would make it less readable and confusing for the humans. Why not just use the titles that make sense.
