    I've heard alt tages are pretty important for google.

    Yes, use the alt tag with links and use the alt tag with all images.

    No, it isn't. If you refer to image indexing (images.google.com), just name the image to something meaningful. No idea why people still use 02134.jpg or something ;P

    As for ALT tag in general - it carries small weight (as well as <em>, <strong>, etc), but proper usage helps a lot, for it is widely used across the page.
