Is there any great benefit in using keywords as alt-attributes in images on the page. I have read that it is better to use a proper description of the image to assist people with disabilities. I have also read that it is a good place to place keywords. Does anyone have any views on what is best.
More and more people are discovering other sites through the image searches they do. And, like you said, it helps when images are turned off, which I think is pretty rare. All I do is make sure I fill in the alts with a good description of the image. That's all. My sites are found by way of my images quite a bit. You don't need to over think it. Regards, Tony Thomas
Not looking to stuff keywords or do anything pointless. So a picture of a bride with an alt-attribute saying "wedding photography" will do nicely. Thanks Tony.
I have noticed a few hits from google through some of the images on my site that use alt tags descriptions. so I think it does help to place keywords in the tags, which are appropriate to the content of the image.
try and do both - describe your image first and foremost, for your users, but try and get a couple of keywords in there for the search engines too

matt5409, great replay. I completely agree with this answer, you have to find a balance been SEO and usability for the people on your site.
alt image tags will count your keyword as part of your keyword density ratio for the site. Images are therefore a great way to "slip in" a few keyword phrases to increase your sites authority.
when you say use alt tags, does this mean just naming the photo "keyword".jpg or how is it done? thanks
you can use keywords or some character description but just keep in mind, don't use keyword stuffing. because most of people use so many keywords in one alt image tags. so you have to care about this thing.
I definitely put relevant searched keywords in my img alt tags. It should help Google view that the page has content relavent to the keywords, be it images or text
