Look at the post you just made in this thread..... there should be an "Edit" button.

I was under the impression that one could edit/delete only the posts within the stipulated time and the threads could only be edited but not deleted!

Yes, you have understood it correctly. Members are allowed to edit/delete post within 8 hours of posting it and they are allowed to edit thread not allowed to delete it.

Come on Shawn, life doesn't ends after 8 hours ;)

I still can’t get it is why deleting posts by request not allowed?

Mods are deleting some posts routinely every day (I have proof of that in my Subscribed folder
http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1811009) and yet if someone made post he/she
regrets they made 24 hours before for some reason cannot be deleted.

I think that under some circumstances Mods should oblige posters and delete their thread on request
    if good reason is given.

    :)

Not to mention, you're not Shawn, where did I mention in my post less than 8 hours?

Why don't you read whole post next time before posting some useless observations.

No, sorry. People really need to think before they post. Especially considering we already give them a mechanism to delete/edit it within 8 hours of making it.

Shawn - as a forum owner, I get threats on a semi-regular basis from members telling me they are going to sue me if I do not delete all of their post. Its usually from members who are mad, say they are leaving the forum, they claim they own their post,,,, I'am sure you have heard it just like I have.

How do you deal with people that say - since they made the post, its their property.

I got so sick and tired of the emails saying - "delete all of my post or I'am going to sue you for everything you have", I finally enabled members to be able to delete their own post.

From a legal standpoint, how can you justify not allowing members to remove their post?

With my forum, I tried to take the same standpoint that youtube did. All of the post made by the members are their property.

    http://www.youtube.com/t/terms

I fully understand this is your community, and you make the rules,,, I would just like to know.

The DP FAQ explains the rule clearly:

Forum rules can not override Intellectual Property Rights set by US Federal Law or International Law.

Lets take Warner Brothers, or the Universal Music Group on youtube - they own the property rights to all of their videos. Once they decide to take their videos down, there is nothing youtube can do about it. Youtube has to allow the removal of the videos because they do not belong to youtube.

Its like loaning your car to a friend. Your friend says - "after 8 hours the car belongs to me". No it doesn't, the car belongs to the lawful owner. Just because you loaned the car to your friend does not grant them ownership.

Someone correct me if I'am wrong - If a member post an exert from their ebook here on digital point, they are granting digital point non-exclusive rights to use that material. But they are not granting digital point ownership of that material.

I'am not an attorney, and I'am not trying to give legal advice. But from what I understand, that is the way it works.

If I'am wrong, someone correct me.

What I posted above is some of the same arguments that people have thrown in my face when demanding that their post be removed from my forum. I really dont care of Shawn allows post to be deleted or not.

Even though I agree with you that forum’s owner cannot claim as his own somebody else
intellectual properties, I will play the Devil’s advocate and say that owner never ask person
to come to his forum and made some crappy posts in a first place.

Said that, I do believe that everything that member is posting in forum belongs to him/her
and that member has exclusive rights and the last word if what was posted should stay or go.

Beside, I don’t see any harm if some posts just simply vanished…. well, many posts.

    ;)

Agreed... but a user publishing their post is the same as a writer publishing a book. What do writers do if they decide down the road they never wanted to publish the book? They certainly can't undo their publishing and demand the books they previously published be destroyed.

If someone posts something that is copyrighted and wasn't theres to publish to begin with, that's obviously a different story.

Where would the delete button be or would you just want people to edit with something like "please delete this post or thread"

The "Edit" button gives you a "Delete" option within it.
