I added a link on Wikipedia 2 days ago. A few hours later I read that Wikipedia had added nofollow to their external links. When I checked, sure enough, the link had nofollow specified. I just checked my backlinks this afternoon on Yahoo and the new link is listed.

They will still show up, but won't pass any direct SERPs value

More and more links will be NOFOLLOW
Maybe the only way to get high quality backlink is to buy a link from yahoo directory
    :)

I see NOFOLLOW has been so effective in cleaning up blog spam so it should work well for Wikipedia.

    Seriously though...

A lot of Wikipedia articles are rehashed (stolen) from other sources on the internet.

The least Wikipedia and the authors could do is sight these sources with standard links.

BTW Wikipedia brings targeted traffic regardless of the juice effect.

I'm guessing they activate no-follow on pages likely to attract link spammers.

this can only be a good thing. Im sick of websites profiting off of wiki's "external links" section. IMO this will only help keep wikipidia a true resource.

This is not new, since months ago the links are rel=nofollow as far as I know

BTW, this is the Google forum, not the Wikipedia so I don't see the relation at all.

    NOFOLLOW is a google-only attribute .
Nofollow has no use other than to notify google of the link's exclusion from the target's PR calculation . It has no effect on the wikipedia visitors or editors , nor the visitors of users of the linked sites .
    Its Google only .

    Cheers

It all seems quite a shame. However, it was too easy to spam. The downside is what happens to Google when everything goes no follow?

Probably same thing that happened when the web became too big to just be organized in directories (Search engines came) , and then all the meta tags became almost completely irrelevant for searching and organizing the web (google came) , and eventually someone will find out the next better solution .

I've had sites where wikipedia stole my content and now they can't even give me a link in return?

Did the nofollow tag stop blog spam? I don't know about everyone here but I still get viagra, pharmacy and all sorts of blog and comment spam even after implementing the nofollow tag.
