This sounds like it happened all of a sudden - and that means to me that it is likely a google penalty. But it could also be that your competition just got so much better that they pushed you to page 2 in the serps or something.

the same thing happened to us last Tuesday - one day it was normal and we ranked for hundreds of keyword phrases on page 1 of G and now each of those terms is on page 5-7 - what's weird is that another set of keywords that's unrelated still ranks well (and the same as before). Also, we have another site in the same industry and it has not been affected.

What kind of penalty do you think this could be? Have you heard anyone else talking about a big change lately?

Do you track your traffic by keywords? Perhaps your best keyword has dropped down some positions.

Wow, that is a big drop in traffic... if you still have the same rankings as previously and lost all of that traffic then one would assume that it has to do with the holiday season :)

Similar thing happened to one of the sites I work with.

Does the index page of your site show #1 with you do site:yoursite.com?

If it doesn't then that's a telltale sign of a penalty. Like I said it happened to me about 4 weeks ago & things are slowly starting to come back.

I think there's big problem with your website article contents, do they have the problem: copping?

    aaheroe,

Does your website that got whacked target two, separate and different set of keywords by any chance?

I had to deal with a similiar incident, but after a couple of days, everything mellowed out and went back to normal.
