How can I make such a statement? Simply because I know it to be true. How can this be true? By using the ‘scientific method’ I can proove it. The six steps of the scientific method (sciencebuddies.org) are: 1. Ask questions: How reliable is Google PageRank? Could it be fake? 2. Background research: Google alone owns the PageRank concept and alone controls its calculation. Google also alone owns and controls the Google Toolbar which displays the Google PageRank values. Therefore, when a Google PageRank value is displayed on the Google' Toolbar, Google alone is the author of, and soley responsible for, any value presented to us. This, as per license, is done with no third-party intervention. 3. Construct hypothesis: Reportedly, Google PageRank can be spoofed allowing a false value to be displayed on Google's own toolbar. Apparantly, unscrupulous webmasters, SEOs, directory owners, and others can profit from these false values. 4. Test hypothesis by experimentation: I myself and many of you have repeatedly verified that sites with a spoofed Google PageRank value will and do get uncontested display of this false and misleading value on Google's own toolbar. This false datum value is generated by Google-trademarked calculations, on Google-owned machines, then is transmitted directly to end-users for prominent display on Google-licensed utility programs, i.e. on the Google Toolbar. 5. Analyze data and draw conclusions: It would seem that Google has made the decision to allow continued placement of the spoofed PageRank values on their own toolbar together with 'reportedly' true Google-calculated PageRank values, and has done so for quite some time. This alone makes the whole PageRank concept unreliable at the very least. But further, by not differenciating the calculated-to-be-true values from the known-by-all-to-be 'faked' values, any one Google PageRank value which is displayed to us may easily be considered a falsehood as well. Logic dictates that repeated mechanized output of falsehoods renders the machine itself as being 'false.' Therefore, the Google PageRank concept, its implementation, and its usage, can all be considered in general false. 6. Communicate results: This article posting does just that. Full disclosure: The scientific method utilized above is incomplete. To be honest, I made two shortcuts, assumtions really, of which I have no concrete evidence or direct proof: 1, that the Google powers-that-be know of this situation, and 2, that Google could easily fix or rectify this situation. I estimate the probability of each to be truthful at over 99.44% and my reasoning here is quite simple. Google is a young and dynamic company, and as such I refuse to believe that no one in upper management knows of the ability to spoof a false value out of the PageRank system. There's just no way that every one of them could be that far 'out-of-touch' and still sucessfully run such a large company. The same could be said about fixing the system. I also refuse to accept that this spoofing cannot be easily fixed. Even if it couldn't be fixed, validity checks could be added to the existing system, either permanently, or temporarily until the sytem is re-written or replaced. On the other hand, they could just unplug the damn thing! Arguments: One might argue that since valid PageRank values are displayed most of the time, that its okay to keep using it just the way it is. That argument would be correct, and I'll even admit it. In summary: False Google PageRank values means the system itself may as well be considered false as well. Since anything false is also a lie, Google PageRank is indeed also a lie. And because any lie is also fake, all Google PageRank is indeed fake. All Google PageRank Is Fake. 'All Google PageRank Is Fake' is part one of a three-part series. John
Interesting look at page rank. However, You make one large error and contradict yourself. Your premise is ALL Google page rank is false. Yet, in your arguments, you state that "valid PageRank values are displayed most of the time" I would take that to mean that all page rank is not fake.
I think that it is about time that you create your own search engine. From then on, try to convince to use it. When you have a lot of users then you could create your own page rank, LOL.
your logic is... well... ermm.. wrong here: The true fact is that google page rank is not a recognised website authority within the browsers, all people and all websites therefore it is an illusion, and thus unreal, but influential. Besides we all like a good party trick.
nice way to promote your site... i wouldnt think of it. But you should have posted a press release to make some controversy... good luck though
A wise man once told me that boobs and pagerank may be fake. Each require a simple squeeze to confirm. Seriously, spoofing pagerank is going to happen. But the truth is pagerank is real in most cases. You just have to know how to do a little research. Most places with high pagerank earned it while some bottom feeders try to make a buck off of buying domains in auction or spoofing PR.
Maybe Yes, Maybe No.. if it fake, everyone ( read : webmasters ) still loving PR from PR, we can make and got $$$$
