Aliens do not exist... oh and space travel is impractical, too!

"I have noticed recently that there have been numerous threads about space and aliens. I couldn't really seem to find a decent place in those threads to get my point in edgewise, so here is my own thread to say it: aliens do not exist, and to think otherwise is just wishful thinking, akin to religious faith.

The reason for this is simple: parsimony. In science we do not accept a hypothesis without evidence, and the evidence of intelligent extraterrestrials in precisely zero. Without a good reason to think that life elsewhere in the universe is even possible, let alone common, there is no reason to make the leap to the assumption that alien life is common is patently unscientific. Frankly, belief in aliens is laughable when it comes from people who are otherwise quite insistent on being rational and scientifically minded.

While we're at it, let me just say that it is also pointless to waste time, money and human lives with space travel fantasies. Space colonization might be conceivable at some point in the very distant future, but in the next few hundred years interplanetary travel is an absurd fantasy. There is nothing to benefit humanity in space, no resources to speak of, at least not that would make any economic sense to go get and bring back. There is no place worth colonizing in the entirety of the known universe, only a hostile and radiation bathed wasteland. Space tourism has some interesting potential, but is really only a bourgeois diversion and hardly amounts to more than sub-orbital flights, not really space travel.

By the way, I would love to be proven wrong as to either of those points, I truly would, since I am a lover of science fiction as much as the next guy. But the fact of the matter is that indulging in space fantasies is really a waste of time. So, seriously, stop wasting your time on space and focus your energies where they can do some good, here on planet Earth. Continued on trackback" Diabolicomix.

So what is your opinion regarding this ?

I disagree, earth is just another planet in universe. can you imagine how many planets and stars in our milky way, or in Andromeda ? so, can't be live in those planets ? maybe they can be intelligent than humans.

otherwise, I believe we can pass light speed. this is a long subject and my English is not enough. there are no other subject I like more than this. not even girls.. ;)

if you give another point, please write simple. then I can express my idea about that.

It is a little narrow minded to think that in the whole vast Universe that only one planet exists that can support life.

If a planet exists where water and vegetation exists elewhere the chances are alien life could indeed exist.

I believe according to scientific research last I heard the planet known as Tau Ceti is the most likely nearest planet that is likely to support other lifeforms. Admittedly well out of our present capabilities in regards to space travel.

Thing is though if you had told people in 1900 man would fly to the moon you would have been laughed at. That means in 100, 200 or 300 years time space travel will have developed further than anything we could possibly imagine today, so I would say never say never.

To think that in this vast universe "Mankind" as fairly un evolved as we are are the most superior living being is imho not seeing the possible bigger picture and somewhat a closed minded way of thinking.

Nobody can make such rash statements and claim "that is the truth" until the evidence is there to prove things either way. As we can't get very far from Earth with our relatively primitive (compared to what could or will be) transportation it will likely be many many years b4 that evidence is presentable either way.

I like this thread because its speculation. There will be arguments for a long time about this with some people saying this and another saying that. For me, I'll sit on the fence for awhile because when it comes down to it this topic really doesn't change the course of life as it is now. What I mean by that is that I'll get up tomorrow, go to work, come home, go to bed. The day some truth actually is established and people can finally say "Yes there is Aliens, here I will introduce you to my friend their name is IWBAIwbAL" then OK. But ultimately, until that day comes, why bother to bicker/argue?
