Alexa ranks websites according to the amount of traffic they receive. The thing is they only track users that have the alexa toolbar so it's pretty much useless.
Yes, the Alexa Toolbar has two fatal flaws: 1) Only works with Internet Explorer 2) Is detected as spyware by just about every spyware checker. Alexa can be a handy source of information, but it's just one (very minor) factor to look at when appraising a site. I really wish they worked with all browsers and weren't on the spyware lists, then they'd be a lot more useful. As it is, it's still handy to check the rank of sites toward the top of the food chain. Their data is skewed toward the non-tech-savvy since techies tend to clear their browsers and are less likely to use IE.

Alexa ranking has a HUGE bias towards internet marketing type site. My blog leedominic.com do not have nearly as much traffic (1/5 traffic maybe) as my textbooks ecommerce site, but its Alexa ranking is 1/3 as low as the textbooks one, just take it as a grain of salt.
This is good information. I always wondered about Alexa, and why my site ranked so low with it. Seems it's now one less thing to worry about!
