Alexa ranks google # 2 - is there alternative to the alexa tool?

I was surprised to see yahoo #1 and google #2.

Who is the competition to Alexa and has more comprehensive data? I tried sites like compete.com but it gave no ranking for many sites.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

alexa is the best for it's cause.. you can also use Google trends for websites for the more popular sites tho.

alexa is a joke. It's not very accurate. For one of my sites, it said I lost 600% in traffic when I'm gaining over 300%.

alexa is good but not accurate, and you can change ranking by self with alexa toolbar and reload of page, and you can search and find this method in the net

Alexa gains pretty much most of its information from people using their Toolbar (which a lot of AntiVirus/Spyware/Malware/Trojan programs flag it as a threat).

Google #2 because they lost traffic to google.co.uk, google.com.ua,...

For large sites it should be accurate.. for small sites it's not. You're right about that. The issue is sample size.

That is because Yahoo definitely gets more visitors that google.com
Remember yahoo is not just a search engine. Its a portal with lot of service including email. All those traffic counts towards the domain yahoo.com
Where as google splits its traffic to google.co.uk, gmail etc.

Alexa figures are not accurate, but it is a good tool to make a comparison between sites.

Alexa isn't reliable. Most of the results is influenced by there tool bar.

Alexa is pretty accurate, in small sites it can be off by some offset --- but it is still fairly accurate even then.

And no, you CANNOT cheat Alexa unless you work incredibly hard to cheat it, and doing that method would not even be worth it.

    G vs Y
that is very easy to explain
G has MANY sites = Gmail, blogger, orkut, blogspot, etc
hence the traffic is split into many domains
while Y collects all traffic into one domain resulting in higher alexa rank
if G would have ALL traffic in one single domain name - then G woudl be #1
since ALL www pros know above - it is Unimportant for G to have alexa 1 or 2.

Quantcast is great, but it suffers just like Alexa from the bias of user base issues. I think using compete, alexa and quantcast will give you an idea...but truthfully there is no real way to judge...
