I don't know exactly how Alexa works too but I think it is important to have an Alexa high ranking especially if you are thinking of monetizing your blog, right? Advertisers reference Alexa as one of their criteria. Higher Alexa ranking means more advertisers...

That's right. the worst thing is that Alexa is not really that accurate. And every1 who are trying to get advertisers, can't get them, b/c like you mentioned, many of those advertisers look at alexa ranking.

If you dont care about making money from your website or blog etc or dont use advertising network which uses alexa ranking, then alexa ranking means nothing. However, many advertisers still look at the alexa ranking when it comes to paying for ads. No matter people think about alexa, it is still important to have some good ranking.

There are a few other site rankings out there, and I can give you a few of them. But here a better advice. Okay yes, do use Alexa, but don't just look @ the rank. If you read what Alexa responded to me (this should be the first post on this Thread), they said that they measure the ranking based on the # of unique visitors as well as the number of views per each visitor. This is why Yahoo is number 1 and google is number 2. Because the majority of Yahoo users (about 60-something %) uses their email. and you know when u check ur email, you click through a lot of different pages thus giving that site, high page views / visit. now when u look @ google, most people @ google (about 60-something %) uses their search. and as a contrary, you know, you don't go through too many different pages when u searching - usually all it takes is 1 or 3 pages to find what u are looking for, thus low - medium views / visit. so you see, google has more unique visitors than yahoo but yahoo has more pages views per visitor that's why google is not going to steal that spot from google anytime. check out ranking.com must prove a little bit more in detail than alexa.:(

But hey, even ranking.com has its own downfall. sorry i had to add this, as i didn't check sites ranked high. Yes; if u look at sites with higher ranking, even ranking.com is not going to give you a good review. so the best thing to do, is to use either ranking.com or alexa, but make sure that you look in details. don't go by the rank, go by the numbers. page views, unique views, etc. not just one (e.g. only page views or only unique visits, or only the over all ranking).
