I ran some spyware stuff and deleted Alexa. I tried to reinstall it and only get a blank area for the toolbar on the browser window.

I tried doing a system restore and unistalling and reinstalling alexa, but it's just an empty tool area. Anyone know how to get alexa back?

Any idea where they pull the geo data from? Whois or the current data within site's profile on alexa? If the latter is the case, I should update my sites to include the location info and see in how many states they will be at the top 10 :p

I've had this problem before and just turning the toolbar off from the view menu and then on again worked for me. It happens to me usually if I change my browser to full screen and then go back to regular view, not sure why.

I don't really understand how Alexa rank works. Apparently, I gather, low=good, high=bad.

My oldest site is from Jan '05- not rated by Alexa until this month. I have a couple of sites I put up in September that also got rated by Alexa this month.

The numbers don't make any sense to me, though. The old site (PR4) clocks in at 700,509. The new sites, with relatively fewer total hits both have an Alexa rating of 32. This is as reported in URLTrends.

Does this make sense to anyone?

Alexa ranking is based on traffic, and only tracks site visitors that are using the Alexa Toolbar. It uses the number of visits from toolbar users to estimate overall site traffic. It can be way off, but overall pretty good.

But for your blogs Emil is right that's domain wide not, sub specific.

    Ahh, I see.

But why, if ranking is based on # of hits by Alexa toolbar users, is the rating subtractive? If the formula is "x-(hits)=Alexa rank", What is the value and the significance of x?

Is x perhaps total sites ranked, and therefore an upwardly-variable variable?

The rank you see is not the result of a formula - it's a rank. #1 is the site with the highest number of hits, #2 is the site with the second highest number of hits - and so on.

Obviously this is only based on users that have the toolbar installed.

No my alexa bar is completely empty. I've turned it on and off like a stripper on $3 lap dance night. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled. Nothing.

I mean I know alexa isn't that important, but if I'm checking my site out it's at least nice to increase my alexa ranking.

It's like the spyware stuff said "Blam we're going to make it so Alexa never works for you again." I've even uninstalled the spyware stuff. Anyone know how to fix this?

    Easier said than done.

First Alexa averages traffic over few weeks. So you wont get into top 1000 in a week.

Second two views a day is nothing. I use Alexa toolbar. I visit 100s of pages on DP everyday...doesnt seem to have boosted DP's rankings much (Though it has moved from 476 to 410 since I joined in July). I dont think 2 views a day is going to help much.

I think you're underestimating how hard it is to go from 476 to 410 that's elite but say 3,000 should be easy 20,000 would be really easy i bet if 20 people visited a site 2 times a day with the toolbar and sat there and refreshed the bar for like 4-10 seconds i think 20,000 would be achievable...

Cause i remember a week ago i had a daily rank of like 40k and i thought man there must have been 400 visitors or something bit no there was 70 and that was enough, not to mention probably only ten or so of them had and Alexa toolbar so i dought its that hard to get to 20K...

Anybody want to take me up on this, it would be intersting and it would be a great BDay present for me... :)
