Alexa.com is such a joke

I agree that Alexa rankings are next to useless. But, many companies still place importance on it. The higher your Alexa rank, the better for advertisors. Or so they think.

 

Alexa isn't very useful.

 

like what norrad had said, having a good ranking in alexa will attract advertisers, it work will the same principle of having a google pagerank.

 

Just great! I have 1,100 uniques a day and show an Alexa above 600,000.
But then again, that's what I get for using a Mac!

 

Install firefox on your Mac and get the Alexa toolbar. I just did that.

 

Why do you even pay atttention to Alexa? There ratings is based on there toolbar. That should tell you how flawed there system is.

 

what's the point of their "sites linking in" stat? How is it that I have around 200 backlinks, yet not even a single link in that section of Alexa?

 

alexa measures "Page Views" not uniques not visits and not "hits"

If someone is linking to a photo in your site - this is a hit but not a page view so won't count

 

Don't rely on Alexa stats to much use other tools to determine how good your site is.

 

Never liked alexa totally useless for me.

So gotta dump Alexa traffic stats from my site.

 

I talked to a huge business broker company in the United States one time about doing some work for them. They mentioned that they used Alexa to determine the value of the sites they bought and sold. I actually laughed, I thought they were joking -- but they weren't.

They had just started getting into the online world, they've been doing brick and mortar businesses for the past 50 years or so. Someone seriously gave them some wrong information.

 

I agree alexa is flawed in its design.

The traffic shown is not a true indication but it is still indication none the less.

If you see a website ranked 8 million and another ranked 100,000 you know roughly which one is more active.

 

If you have a webmaster related site, you will most likely have an alexa rank that is a lot better than other niche sites because webmasters usually have the alexa toolbar installed. I have one site that gets about 2000 uniques a day and the rank is like 900,000. I have a webmaster related site that gets about 200 a day and the rank is like 100,000. Its all based on the toolbar!

 

The only use for alexa is to see how popular your site is among (stupid) webmasters

 

Alexa is a really bad way to rank and compare sites, i do have a plugin in FF for it, but don't read too much into it. They get things sooo wrong, best using compare etc.

Do not really trust alexa's way of ranking so i always use google and yahoo a a guide.

 

Alexa rankings are not to be taken seriously. It only can calculate the visits of the visitors using alexa toolbar. So, if you have a site whose visitors do not use the toolbar then you are not getting the alexa ranking. But most of the advertisers rely on alexa rankings to decide whether or not to advertise in a site. Maybe it's because there are not any other better means by which sites can be ranked. By the way the alexa ranking of one of my site is 9 mil + and I do not care.
