I know we have some Mac Geeks around here so hopefully one of you kows this... I bought myself an Airport Express unit from Harrods, bit posh I know, and I was wondering... I tried to hook up my Phidgets LED Kit to the USB port on the AirPort Express though it wasn't recognized as being plugged in. I had little time to geek about with it so thought I'd ask... Does that USB port works like any other, built-in, USB port? Can any device be used with it, or perhaps even a USB Hub?
Aint that a shame... Loads of cool ideas gone out of the window... I'll have to wait for that until these folks launch their wireless USB 'aircable'. And besides the more expensive Elgato etc. stuff, there's not an AirPort for Video is there?
I would guess there will be an Airport Video before too long (at the same time, or shortly after) the iPod AV and iTunes Movie Store opens up. Just seems like a natural progression.
I hope so. Any ideas about whether the G4 1.42Ghz Mac Mini with the Radeon 9200 with its own 64mb RAM performs better, video wise, than the new Dual Intel ones with the on board Video that shares ram? With regular PCs I always found that the actual GPU is more important than the CPU for video. G4 Mac Mini's are being flocked on eBay for cheap by the dozens so I'm contemplating getting one or two.
Been using a G4 mini for the past year now. I've installed the FrontRow hack and it works well, there's a little delay but it's generally fine. However, if you are thinking about a G4 mini then I would highly recommend bumping the RAM to 1GB, this made a world of difference.
Thanks. It seems like you can pick up 2 G4's off eBay for the price of one Dual Core Intel - a rather tempting deal if I can get some RAM cheap and a good remote.
According to these benchmark results the G4 1.42 version aint all that bad compared to the intel Dual: http://www.macspeedzone.com/html/hardware/machine/performance_in_the_raw/06/3_8a.shtml Note how it only does 5 frames a second less than the Dual Core in the gaming test and with Photoshop it even performs better than the Dual Core. Also on the CineBench GL test. Seems encouraging...
If you are using Photoshop then definitely choose the G4 mini. PS is not a Universal Application just yet so it has to run on Intel Macs via the Rosetta emulation layer, which apparently can slow it down quite a bit. Check to see if your most used apps are Universal or not, that will make your decision easier.
