You've probably already heard this sad news. No distress signal. It just vanished.

Any thoughts? What are the news agencies saying over in Singapore or Indonesia?

Apparently, there is bad weather that the pilot mentioned and also that is hampering the search effort. Really sad to hear, especially so during the holidays.

This is just terribly sad, and very strange that they haven't found the plane yet at this point. I feel for the family of the crew and passengers.

It just seems wrong a tracked aircraft can just go missing, and we as a modern day world trust these tracked devices with nothing more than a small black box. Which u have to be so close to to pick up the signal. You would think the world standard would have changed since the first plane went missing with great difficulties finding it due to the fact the plane was properly on the sea bed and the under water currents taking the missing plane further away on the sea bed. All we can do is send our thoughts to the staff and public on the plane and also their families.

Its alarming that something as big as a Aircraft can go missing when i can locate my car keys these days. I see some kind of Military/Political Conspiracy behind this.

I don't think there's a conspiracy involved, but I do believe AirAsia should reconsider their flight patterns, altitudes and error on the side of caution when it comes to a hazardous weather forecast. Otherwise they will be folding their company soon. They've already had one incident too many.

I'm just grateful that none of the five planes I took over the Christmas holidays went missing!

If there was each airline would be losing dozens of planes every day.

It is only a two hour flight from Surabaya to Singapore, very sad when I first saw the news, as at now the plane is still missing, still hoping for a miracle.

No, 370 is still a mystery. However, they have begun to recover parts of the plane and bodies from this latest crash, unfortunately.

This seems to have been a weather-related accident, so it would make sense for airlines to re-visit their weather flying policies and procedures.

    Sad news.

We can land a probe on a comet millions of miles away from Earth, travelling at hundreds of thousands of miles per hour, program it to come out of hibernation after 10 years, and send signals back to Earth from millions of miles away, yet we lose a plane a couple of thousands of miles away.

The technology needs to be improved

I am sure they can make planes that will be super reliable and virtually indestructible, but the cost associated with their production will be astronomical. To launch a probe takes billions of $$.

Without a doubt the technology is improving. The problem is no matter how reliable the technology is the possibility of human error and natural negative occurrences is still there.

It's a pure guess, but there's a possibility that the plane was struck by a lightning. At that altitude the lightning bolt is extremely powerful. I am saying this because there was no distress call before the plane went down.

Check out what happened to the car struck by a lightning. Kinda hard to believe that it can happen to anyone driving in stormy weather:

So does that mean there is an explanation for the plane going missing?

Sorry, don't mean to seem ignorant. Just haven't been following the story.
