Lots of working hours and big agricultural areas are wasted because of riddicoulus policies. In EU, farmers get lots of subsidies so they can keep on their highly ineffective agriculture without having to worry about profits. I've also heard that US have similar policies(efforts for keeping a fixed price). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Agricultural_Policy The strongest reason for keeping such ignorant policies is because farmers is an important votebase.
Yes this is very true. Instead of investing on Education we choose to invest in something that only affects a small portion of EU citizens. How can we make significant progress and keep up with nations like the US and Japan if people remain ignorant about policies like this one?
Moreover, these policies artificially raise the cost of food If we removed some of these ridiculous agricultural policies on both sides of the Atlantic, we could significantly reduce hunger in Africa.
Did you know we export food to Africa? Because of subsidies we end up producing things cheaper than they do. The worst part is that because of this they are getting food that is of worst quality than it they have produced it themselves.
The food is foundation of everything. That says it all ..... would you like farmers to dissapear ?? And farming is difficult and it costs wohoho to make some good product that is then underpriced on the market. Obviously you all live in a city and know nothing about us and our condition of work. Emperor you ignorant bastard .... affect small portion of EU citizen!!! . WHAT YOU EAT YOU LITTLE PRICK ..... sorry for my anger but i was working all day yesterday on the field so that jerks like you have something to eat on their fancy table The biggest ignorance i saw on DP is in this very thread. You show no respect
latehorn ... and can you please explain how is agriculture innefective ?? ahh havent seen farm close did you
Thank you for the very polite answer, it’s nice to see that we our views are respected by you. You are very wrong. Not only do I live in a Country that relies greatly on Agricultural exports but also live in a small city with a population of 25.000. All around me I can see farmers big and small. No I’m sorry, I think that was your option not ours. If you don’t like your job you have to options. Look for another one or study in order to do what you enjoy. Yes indeed, I call 4.5% of labour force small. Check CIA if you don’t believe me. I know that it’s hard to hear other people criticize our way of life but you have to understand one thing, we are not perfect and neither is the economy. In order for us to achieve a common good, in this case profit, we have to let some people loose their jobs. Do you mind telling me what you produce, just for curiosity sake.
You talk about some % ... agriculture affect 100% world population And what is exactly you dont like with agriculture politics of EU ? Just so I see that you know what you are talkning about or are you just ranting because someone opened thread and published his opinion and you are like kid ... yee me to me to
Yes it affects 100% of the world’s population, that’s why this system is hurting that very population. What I know from the Agriculture policies is what I read and watch on TV. This subject is more than well documented, so if you want do a google search and you’ll have all the information you can read (from both sides of the story). Maybe I’m just a kid, who know??? Why instead of attacking people don’t you just explain your views on this mater? I think in this way you could explain why subsidies are good and why we should indorse such policies.
my views are pretty obvious I support subsidies so we can be more productive and make more food on sqare meter. Thats it. I just bought great maschine this year because of EU money. And I can make better quality and healthier food because of that. But don't be a fool if you think they just give and dont come and see what is going on on my farm They even have rules in which way you have to place apple trees on your land
I personally think that using machinery on Agriculture is the only solution for European farmers. I also think it’s positive to award subsidies to farmers so they can by machinery but I disagree with subsidising the actual production. I can say from personal experience that peeking apples is not fun and requires a lot of work so to use a machine to assist is not only good in terms of speed but in the long run cost effective.
Agriculture is not very effective in Europe due to the winter season. Swedish 3-month-farmers competing with farmers in Africa is just riddicoulus. The time would be better spent elsewhere.
latehorn you can not depend on someones other agriculture production. All successful countries have great agriculture production. It is foundation of all industries people dont seem to understand that. And yes there are ways to produce tomatoes three or four times a year in europe and very effective. It really looks like you have no idea what modern agriculture
Hahahahahahaha... I see that someone needs to read the Wikipedia entry on Appeal to Authority. Agriculture is not the "foundation of all industries." Agriculture is one industry, and it is one which -- just like all other industries -- should be pushed to the manufacturers with the most significant comparative advantage. This isn't about farming, although I've spent enough time on a farm. This is about economics. "I support subsidies so we can be more productive" is the most wildly ridiculous statement I have heard in quite some time. Subsidies have, in every case, been shown to to reduce competitiveness and productivity in the long term. Worse, you continue by saying "They even have rules in which way you have to place apple trees on your land". If there is one factor which reduces productivity more that subsidies -- it's is beauracratic control of the means and methods of production.
iatm, where are you from? Spain? Italy? I am from Sweden and we have a lot of highly ineffective farmers that can still work 3 months a year due to the subsidies. If subsidies wouldn't exist then we could have some nice forest on their lands instead and they could work more effectivilly in the service business. A lot of my tax money is totally wasted on these people that doesn't contribute much more than unemployed. Agriculture in Africa is much more effective due to the sun angle and the seasons. I don't get why we should do so much ineffective double-work.
They have also rules to regulate the size(height, width, weight) of apples, tomatoes cucumbers and so on. Luckily, this has made some farmers in Northern Scandinavia unemployed
Sorry, but this doesn't state anything of a value. Big areas isn't used for agriculture in Africa while Southern Europe is bloated with disgusting wheatfields instead of some nice forest/parks.
The first image was taken by Nasa Astronauts from orbit. What you see is not snow, but instead greenhouses that have completely taken over the landscape. Image from Almeria Spain. The second Image shows what the subsidies have done to that once peaceful coastline in Southern Spain. Subsidies = African Workers = Poor living conditions = Crime = Poverty = Ghettos = We have to pay more Taxes for these people to go home or to give them better living conditions. A subsidy is a rope that we are tying around our own neck. It won’t be long before we hang ourselves.
