Hey, my friend sold me an article that he took from the net, and it said not allowed to sell, I found out. So can the police come to him and arrest him? Anything bad can happen?

No, the police will not come and arrest him for stealing an article from the internet.. They have better things to do..

In practice what "could" happen is that the rightful copyright holder can claim ownership and file a complaint under the DMCA if in the US.. Other countries have similar laws.. Usually the requirement is to take the article down from wherever it is.. If that doesn't happen the site could be closed by the ISP, and google could remove that page, and possibly the whole site, from the index..

Worst case scenario the copyright holder could sue in civil court to recover any monetary damages that reulsted from the theft of the article.. But usually that is in aincredibly rare thing..

A better question would be what kind of friend would sell you stolen property and are they really your friend??

They wouldn't arrest him but you can always file a complaint. It won't do much because the articles probably didn't cost you much so you won't even be able to take him to court. Better off to learn from your mistakes and cut your losses than waste time on it.

@dlm you can fill a complaint anytime if you have witnesses. :)
If you use the article on a high traffic website, you raise the probability of the owner of the article to find it.

I wouldn't worry yourself over this as there are tons of items being hawked over the net and downloaded for free by users.

LOL, you can't even get a damn cop to arrest someone who writes you a $2400.00 check that bounces anymore. You've got nothing to worry about. Just don't use the article. I would make your "friend" give you your money back. Thats def. not cool.

No, I believe the guy is not his friend as friends don't give problems to each other...

Common sense will tell us that using a stolen property is not good for your...health!

Wait, did you just buy the stolen article back? Now you're in trouble. Watch out, the police might show up and arrest you. Maybe your "friend" was trying to trick you into getting arrested.
