Keep building backlinks. It will go back up.

Also make sure the title tag of the page you are trying to rank with is set to the keyword phrase you want to rank for.

If you are sure that your site is penalized by google, just go to google webmasters and send a request for consideration. Check what wrong you have done in past few days, like are you involved with link exchange, selling your links or anything which is against google TOS.
If you don't find anything which is against google TOS, you need to build a lot of links in order to get high ranking in google.

Some say it takes a couple of months, others say years. It depends what you've been penalised for...

How do you know that your site is penalized by google, do you have any proof, or just you are assuming coz your site jumped from TOP# to 50-200th position.........

Sometimes never. One of my best friend's site was a PR7. Then he dropped to PR2. It's been 5 years now

I did a website a couple of years ago for a car dealership. It had great results in the serps, but about 4 months ago they called me and told me to redirect it to their main site. I tried to talk them out of it, but they are son naive.
Anyway, I put a java redirect on the footer. There was about 800 pages total. The Googlebot busted them in a few days, and didn't give them anything. About 2 weeks ago I went on and took the java script off. After about 10 days Google started ranking it again.
No apology letter, no reconsideration form...it just happened automatically.

Sadly there's a whole lot of guess work involved, and above all, luck...algorithms are seemingly illogical :)

My first question is, how do you "know" your site received a penalty? If your site is less then 1 year old, its normal for google to move your ranking around. Its not uncommon to go from page 1, all the way to page 50 or 60 over night. And then back to page 1 or 2 a week or 2 later.

The most important thing that you can do is read through the google webmaster guidelines. Make sure you are following those guidelines properly.

Are you buying, selling links or doing link exchanges? If so, stop at once. Excessive link exchanges will get you a penalty.

Besides that, dont worry about it.

just keep building backlinks. Also how do you know you were penalised. SERPS changes all the time depending upon your backlinking efforts and it could be that you haven't being doing as much as others. The most likely explanation is not a google penalty.

In times your ranking seemed fluctuating, do such things to ensure your site indexed more often.

if you figure out what has gotten you your penalty, then you could fix that and you might have your penalty lifted within a week. Then, it's up to you how fast you get your serp back

It depends on what you do meanwhile.
Keep building backlinks and fresh contents. It shouldn't take more than a month to get the position back.
