Basically, an affiliate program is a way that, by you posting ads from advertisers on your site, you earn commissions. There are few ways to earn commission from advertisers. If you don't know these terms, wiki them! CPM - cost per mille (thousand impressions) - you get commissions based on a thousand views of the ad. A lower payout but if you've got a ton of traffic it can work for you. CPC - cost per click - you get paid each time a visitor clicks on an ad. CPA - cost per aquisition - you get paid each time a visitor clicks on an ad AND completes an action as specified by the Advertiser. It may be simply filling out a form and clicking submit (a lead) or completing a purchase (a sale). Advertisers like this model because they are paying for results. But if you value your site's visitors and want to provide them with relevant advertising, you can target these ads to your users and the rate of conversion improves. There are many ways to do this like geo-targeting and behavioral targeting. THere are so many services out there competing for your business as Publisher (the Affiliate). Do a search for affiliate program in google and you'll see! These companies will manage the ads that appear on your site (or any other type of media that you use to publish ads like emails, or pop-ups) and if they are a CPA network, won't take a cent of your commissions usually. I hope this helps. PM me if you want specific programs to try!
