    Affiliate program means,
Once you sign up under any affiliate network, you will get some links through which you should generate sales or leads(sign ups), then you will be paid some money as commission for the sale or lead.

Basically, you get paid for promoting someone else's product. Based on the product, you get paid for a certain action that the user performs (Click, Lead, or Sale).

Above are great explanations. Simply, you are paid a commission, or bounty, for selling someone else's product on, or from, your site.

I think to perhaps make things a lil clearer:

You (the publisher) must aid the advertiser (or merchant) to drive traffic to the merchant's site. You do this via links, banner ads, or a product catalog/feed that the merchant provides, and you get paid commissions for a certain action that the merchants requests you to do. for most it will be a customer must make a sale, and for some a lead is all that is necessary (leads=downloads, sign ups for newsletters, etc). with the use of tracking pixels/codes, the affiliate program will know whether you qualified a sale or lead for the merchant, and hence, the corresponding commisssion.

    hope this helps ;)

Cymax Stores has it about right. Coincidently, we just launched an affiliate program. Details at this posting. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1091493

Basically, you are selling without any manufacturing, inventory, shipping or logistical concerns. Also, there is no risk compared to business risks associated. This is because you can stop selling and switch to a different program if it does not bring in the best money you can find for your traffic.

For the merchant any extra sales are a bonus and they help bring down overhead costs (per item) and therefore any additional sale that would not normally occur without the program is worth a lot.

I noticed the post I linked to above has not really been viewed and I'm not sure why. We are offering 12% commission on all sales generated from leads generated by the affiliate and I thought that would be pretty good. Should be about 15 to 20 CPC based on quality traffic.

Does anyone have thoughts on this. I'm new to affiliate programs and not sure what to expect.

    Thanks

if you want some detailed information about the programs themselves and how to make money using them, check out some of the industry blogs. There is a lot of good information to be found for free.
