I'm interested in starting affiliate marketing. Do you have any advice/resources on this topic?

Yes and Yes. Affiliate marketing has changed my life, and it may very well change yours. There is nothing better then working for yourself. Also, is it hard to type after brain surgery? I have a friend that had a brain tumor removed, and she lost a lot of her motor function and still has not fully recovered yet.

Yes, my surgery was the removal of a tumor. I have been receiving occupational and physio therapy to assist me in the recovery process. It's not so much the physical recovery that'll be short term, it's the shock of the whole thing that'll take quite a few years to go away.

To everyone: Do you recommend any startup resources? I am more than willing to pay for eBooks or reports.

Honestly brendan, you don't need to buy something to get started. I would ask questions and get advice here, and read some good affiliate marketing blogs. A couple of good ones are UberAffiliate.com, SEOBook.com and ShoeMoney.com

I'm just clueless when it comes to this stuff so I think some kind of startup resource wouldn't be a bad idea.

I've heard, I don't have experience, that www.wealthyaffiliate.com is a good startup resource. Like I said, I don't have experience, but I am also looking into getting into some sort of affiliate marketing and I feel really lost. I suppose I just need to give it a try tho?

several years ago i had a friend who went through 3 rounds of brain surgery, he had a steel mesh plate(?) in his head, and he was still able to get back in his race car and be competitive.

start out by reading all of the help pages on the adsense website, and create your sites on topics that interest you the most... share your expertise with the world.

perhaps brain surgery is something that you might want to write about? there could be some personal satisfaction in helping others through it? maybe just use it as a way to get started?

a wordpress blog might be the easiest thing to set up, there are some free adsense-friendly themes like: http://thewrongadvices.com/2007/05/18/prosense-an-adsense-ready-seo-wordpress-theme/

Those are called shunts and thank god I didn't need one.

So, do you think this is the right path for me? I was thinking of going back school in the mornings, radiation (because that gay tumor was cancerous and the very last thing I want to do is anything like this in 10 years) and work on a website for the rest of the day. Or start into affiliate marketing?

you could use the blog for affiliate marketing, just substitute the adsense ads for affiliate ads... or some combo of both... what to use would depend on the subject matter and the type of traffic.

i'm guessing that a site about brain cancer wouldn't do well for affiliate marketing, but it could have some high-paying keywords for adsense.

i have never had much luck with affiliate marketing per se, because i don't make sites that are designed to review and sell products, my stuff doesn't attract that kind of traffic... it sounds like i'm coming back around to your point about getting some direction on where to start, when it comes to affiliate marketing... that's probably a good idea.

affiliate marketing has tremendous potential, but this forum is filled with stories of people who gave companies like commission junction hundreds of thousands of ad exposures, and never made a single sale off of it... google branched out into affiliate marketing, and it was a total flop for its publishers.

it looks to me like you have the writing skills to work the adsense angle, so maybe consider doing both.

The worst that could happen is that you aren't all that successful, but frankly with a good stroy to tell you can be quite successful online, I would definetely give it a shot. Good luck and good health :)

I think it would be great for you to get into affiliate marketing. Just don't get caught up in all the quick money making BS that all over. If you want to get serious about making money in affiliate marketing realize that it takes time and effort. I have a free eBook on my site that covers a lot of the basics. You can download it here: http://www.filliate.com/affiliate-marketing-101

    Thanks for sharing :)

Best of luck with the everything buddy...

To offer some encouragement, I started with affiliate marketing in november and my stats from Commission Junction alone are almost 15,000 in sales and $850 in commission for these sales and leads. My advice is to find something you can promote, carve out your niche and write your passion as best it fits from a profit perspective. You don't need a huge investment to learn and the site is really a traumendous recourse.

My best advice is to start writting reviews and blogging with Wordpress, for the SEO benefits. SEO relates to Search Engine Optimization and the secret of affiliate marketing is traffic (of course!) Reading about SEO and getting the best traffic is a real key. Write about your passion, write articles and build search engine standing. There are a lot of tips and tricks along the way but the sky is the limit and it seems like a great challange for you while your home. That's really why I love affiliate marketing; the independance, the challange, the ability to reach an audience and get paid for something you can do from home.... best of luck and feel free to post your progress and any questions you might have. Best.
