Affiliate links hurting rankings?

My PR 3 site, http://www.acnetreatmentsplus.com hasn't seen much Search Engine traffic since it's been up. I have done related link exchanges and have a bunch of organic links as well. I was wondering if it is possible that my affiliate links on the front page and rest of the pages are hurting my rankings? If so, is there an alternative and anyone can think of?

If anything, the affiliate links should help your rankings. How long has the page been up? When was it submitted to the search engines?

Maybe it took time before you can see the result of it., but affiliate link can really help a site but they must be related to each other.,

I would just use the nofollow tag on the affiliate link.

There aren't too many affiliate links to hurt your rankings. Which Keywords are you trying to rank for? Have you got links with those keywords as anchor texts to the site?

Plenty of links with my anchor text. I'm going for acne treatment - which I suppose is pretty competitive. I may have been too aggressive in my SEO

you are trying to compete for a competitive keyword phrase with other websites that have huge backlinks and have been around for years, you need to make many many more pages all optimized for lesser competitive phrases eg - acne treatment that works - acne treatment solution - acne causes and treatments -etc etc there are thousands, find your phrases - make one page for each phrase

For affiliate link, I suggest you have to put rel="nofollow" on your link or your ranking may diluted. I have experienced with this kind of penalty before.

For building link, I suggest you not too exchange/reciprocal too much and focus on building one-way link from relevant sites. Your competitors for that keyword are up before you many years ago and some of them has authoritative backlink (i.e. DMOZ). You have to update your contents/sitemap regularly and spend budget for quality link, not quantity in some directory which have restrict on their guideline. You may not be listed on that directory and not be refunded but the more editorial on directory, the more trust you will gain. If your site is quality enough then it would be no problem to get listed. You must create quality sites/backlink only if you want to ranked for those phrase in Google.
