Affiliate commissions buying delays?

I was wondering how long it could take for a customer to buy after we refer him to the company. I am thinking about companies like ClickBank and Commission Junction (or other CPA companies).

The reason why I ask that is because I try to see when I should stop promoting a product. It costs money to promote a product on ClickBank for example and I do not want to spend too much too know if a product is good or not (even using the CB tools). I know certain products do not have a good conversion rate and they are expensive to promote, so I should stop. I suppose most of the time the buyer will take action the same day. But with cookies, the sales might happen the days after.

I have never seen any articles talking about when a sale occurs exactly after a visitor has clicked an affiliate link. I am wondering if any of you have read any articles. For example, if the majority of the sales occur days after, I might want to stop after two days and see what happens. If 95% of the sales occur the same day, I know if I got 1000 clicks that product is probably not good enough and I will stop promoting immediately. Seeing cookies of more than 30 days makes me think that I should think in long term. Did you see any statistics?
