Affiliate Advice for a Generic Shopping Site

We’re planning to develop a good domain name that has quality type-in traffic looking to buy stuff. The name is not quite shopping.com but the site we need to build will be a broad shopping site/portal covering many categories.

We’ve been researching affiliate solutions and the best way to implement the site, and here are some points that came up:

    (1) Should we work with different specialized providers for various categories? The beauty of the domain is that it’s so generic and hence the traffic is looking for a range of all the top keywords that people look to buy on the Internet, ie flowers, tickets, wine, computers/software, insurance, loans etc. Assuming that the likes of CJ or Shareasale don’t offer this many products, we were wondering if the solution is to manage a range of affiliate programs with different providers?

    (2) Pharmaceutical Products- One of the main items that the traffic is looking to buy is pharmaceutical products such as hydrocodone, phentermine, viagra. There seems to be some developments going on in this industry with sites getting shut down etc. Presumably some products are ok and others not? We’d greatly appreciate if anyone could share some insight here as we don’t want to do anything to jeopardize our site’s reputation but do need a good solution to serve the traffic looking for these products.

    (3) Shopping Partners & Affiliate Programs- is there much of a difference between the general affiliate programs like CJ and the offerings from Shopping.com, Shopzilla, Pricegrabber, Froogle and so on. These services offer datafeeds and comparison options which would be a requisite for our site, but should we also build in high paying affiliate programs in the relevant categories… would this be allowed / a good way to go?

    (4) Shopping.com vs Shopping.net- is it safe to say that the .net is a relatively simple sight to develop and the .com is an industry giant to work with and not compete against?

Thanks in advance for all your feedback and opinions. We are new to affiliate marketing and appreciate any advice from all you gurus.
