Affect on rankings on Changing Meta tags and Title

I have recently thought of changing my meta description and meta keywords and the Title of the page. Will this change have any affect on my current rankings? will google bots treat the page in the same way as before or i need to do anything about the update?

    P.S. - I don't run a blog but an e-comm site

Well if you optimize the page titles the rankings should go up. Are you worried about that? :)

No My friend, I am only worried about that my change doesn't damage my existing rankings and will google index my changes automatically. I have a PR4 website. Don't want to take unnecessary risks.

Meta keywords is obsolete, meaning that putting it or removing it completely won' affect your SEO whatsoever. I personally don't add the Meta keywords tag anymore because they are a waste of time.

For the Meta Description tag, it has no ranking weight as well, so if you change it, it will not affect your present rankings. However don't be fooled, the meta description is still very important because it is the first description a user will get of your website when you first appear as SERPs. It is important to have a positive and impressive first impact on your potential customers and if you wish to get to them, you could do so by offering them a brief and precise Meta Description tag.

Now last but not least, the Title tag will probably affect your ranking because unlike the two tags above, the Title tag has ranking weight. Therefore changing it might slightly affect your rankings but give it a few weeks and you will most likely regain those lost rankings.

If you change the character string, it will change your ranking. If you do it better, the ranking will go up. Screw it up, and the ranking will go down.I also think this scenario will still happen when you change the Description character string.Meta Keyword does not count.H1 tag, this scenario will happen. And the keyword density will change ranking if you edit the text.

    I totally agree with catanich...

But to be on the safer side, I wont alter the title tags and description tags if I am already ranking well for the keywords, If you need to further improve the ranking (e.g you need to push in top 5 from top 10 or in top 10 from 2nd page.) I would recommend you play with adding more relevant content to home page. and get quality back links that will help you more.

    Regards,

If you are worried about your existing rankings, you can conduct an AB testing using Google optimizer.
It will give an idea how audience and search engines will react to your new meta tags.

One thing, Google now ignores keyword meta tags... So don't worry about it.

As my experiment, If we keep keyword density in required length of meta tags then its not down our ranking.

But Meta description have a very imp in SEO, it will slightly affect on your current ranking..Well, about meta title tag will definitely affect on your current ranking!! After 20-25 days, your ranking comes to in that you lost it!

It's no secret that the title meta tag is one of the most important factors when it comes to on-page search engine optimization. Search engines, including Google, Yahoo and MSN give a lot of emphasis on the title and meta description tags in their algorithms. What many people do not know that the same title tag can actually hurt your rankings if you try to change suddenly with a hope to improve your search engine rankings.

It is not 100% said that the effect will be positive or negative on SERP point of view, but it's sure that any change in meta or title will effect on your site.

It's always a risk changing your meta tags and description, as the search engines will then amend their algorithm taking into account what you currently have, so make note of your current settings for meta description/keywords and title just in case the changes puts you in a worse off position
