I have run many successful Adwords campaigns. Just remember when setting up you campaigns, that everything is all about relevancy.
There is a lot of stories on the internet, the advertising in Adwords is WORK. you don't need any proof for that.
I've brought in over $130,000 since October... Adwords has been good to me. I like to use the Content Network with image ads. when I find a winning campaign, I add a text ad variation. Once I have my winning adgroups, I will make a search campaign out of those keywords. I bid high, and budget low. I slowly eliminate low performing (low ctr) adgroups. Eventually all I'm left with are converting adgroups and then I scale it up. Ideally I get up to spending $1000 per day. My best day was $2500 profit in one day. Hope this inspires you.
My clients are very pleased with my services. I put my customers needs above my own. It's the only way to be these days, if you want respect and WOM advertising.
I have used a well optimized Adwords account and get very targeted business to our site. We spent $100k last year to make $500k.
I have started my campaign this month only. I am getting hits on the website from the targeted regions. But, right now I have not got any business. Hope to get them soon. But yes, I am getting the genuine traffic to my website via these ads.
If you really want to setup a professional Google Adwords campaign you need to get professionals to set everything up the right way I would highly recommend AM Khan he would be one of the best in the business his website is http://www.managemyppc.com Good Luck

Sure, depends how you gauge success. I pay over $1,000 a month for one of my retail sales businesses for Adwords and get about $4-$5k in sales. This is not digital product I sell, it's physical nitch market product. So Adwords does work for the right situation.
Please excuse my ignorance on the topic. I'm trying to convince my business partner that we need to bring in professionals who know what they're doing. Currently he doesn't agree and I'm having trouble explaining why we need outside help. Right now, he thinks Adwords is a waste of money but I truly think it's because we don't know what we're doing. What exactly does a professional bring to the table and what (approximately) would a service like this generally cost?
