Adwords Maintenance: How Do You Do It?

If there's only one thing I haven't yet nailed with Google Adwords, it's Account Maintenance. Structuring, testing and tweaking I don't have any problems with, but I'm sure I could better the way I maintain my accounts.

I don't do affiliate marketing (yet), so there is no need for any impressive excel functions to help me, but a question for you all:

When you change an Ad or alter a bid, where do you make a note of this action? I currently use an Excel sheet which simply has the name of the Ad Group; the date that the Split Test started and then in the next column put the date I plan to look back in to check it. The final column is how often the Ad group needs checking i.e weekly, every 2 weeks, monthly etc. As I get more confident with the Adgroup the need to check it goes from weekly to 2 weekly, 3 weekly and then monthly etc.

This eventually happens to the whole campaign and the keywords that I don't feel are working, by then, I pause and move on to create another Campaign.

I also make a note in a separate worksheet in Excel, what part of the Ad won/lost with the Split Testing, as I find it useful to look back on when I'm creating new ads in the future. It means I don't use any part of the Ad which has 'lost' in the past.

For all those willing to share, how do you do it and what suggestions would you give to improve the way I'm doing my maintenance?
