I'm searching for keywords for a new niche site

Here are the results for match type "broad"

Local Search Volume for April 22,200
    Global Monthly Search Volume 2,240,000

but when I change match type to "exact" i get

Local Search Volume for April 1,000
    Global Monthly Search Volume 165,000

Results are tailored to the languages and countries I choose

Is "broad" search volume realistic? Why it's so high?

I understand the difference between "broad" and "exact" for Adwords campaign.

Broad give high traffic because the basis of traffic are global.

It has nothing to do with global or local. Broad match means that if you search for dogs, it will include stats for 'big dogs', 'how to care for dogs', 'leashes for dogs', etc. For seo's you should be concerned with exact match, as this is the traffic related to just that specific keyword. Using broad match is better for people doing PPC or for people who are doing early basic niche analysis. For example you could find a keyword that has a ton of overlapping keywords with little competition. So in exact match that keyword might seem like little traffic, but if you get all of the broad match keywords too, then it adds up to a lot.

In my humble opinion, you need to balance between "broad" and "exact". But the fact of the matter is that its more realistic to look at broad searches rather than arriving at the conclusion that the "exact" is low and thus skipping it totally. vansterdam gave good illustration about the "big dogs" and "how to care for dogs". But my personal stand is that broad can be more realistics for organic searches. For PPC, exact may be better becos you are bidding for a particular keyphrase. Makes sense ?

    Hi there,

I had a follow on question regarding this topic.

I use Google keywords tool to see which keyword phrase for my niche site I should target in my SEO link building campaigns. So for this purpose which match type should I be looking at...

For example let’s take the keyword: red necklaces

Broad gives me 9900 monthly search volume and exact gives me 1600.

So if I were to complete a good campaign and rank #1 for this term. Would I expect roughly 9000 visitors or 1000?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mike

its just like the Match Case. When ever you gona some word generally. then i would include all generall words, phrases and even character too. but when you gona search with match case then you find out specific term or results that doesnot include any other general term , character, or words.
