Adwords Content Placement -- how to determine bids?

    I've set up several banner ads on a list of different sites. What I'm scratching my head about is finding appropriate bids to get my banners to display on these websites -- there seems to be no average CPM rate that these placements go by.

    Do I have to sit around all day and slowly nudge the bids up until I hit the sweet spot? Seems like a really bad way to do it.

    Is there any worthwhile way to figure out how much I should be spending?

    How can someone website get top position in sponsor linking(i.e in google addwords) in a keyword search? how can i come to know to how much bid can get top position?
