It seems like a lot of people with Web Directories here on the forums, and some of them are spending thousands on the advertisement. But there are only few web directories promoted with AdWords.

Is there a particular reason not to do so?

    Thank you.

Web directories primarily use pagerank as their main selling point. No point wasting money on advertising a PR1 web directory that charges $20 to submit.

Revenue doesn't come from the traffic.

If you make more per sale than you spend advertising why not. Pr 5 might make some sales on adwords.

I mean if I search "PR5 Web directory" on Google sometimes I got zero Adwords results. I am sure webmaster who wants to add his site to high rank web directory will do this search, and I am also sure that I am not the first one who is considering adwords for "PR5 Web directory" keyword.
I suspect that something wrong with that idea and I am trying to understand exactly what’s wrong.

Not a bad idea - I noticed that someone is doing it now, perhaps you inspired them!
