I have a site that ranks on the first page of Yahoo and MSN, however on Google it’s struggling to be listed on the top 10 pages. I was wondering if having an ad words campaign could be affecting this. I guess its common sense that if you are paying Google to be listed they would not move you up the rankings. Is this the case of do I have to work harder on optimizing my site for Google? Thanks
I don't think theres any confirmation for this, one way or another. I've had a site on first page for some keywords that I also used for adwords and that site got dumped to the 10th in a week. However, I can't say for sure that that was the reason because of the recently SERP movements which messed up a lot of sites. I've stopped that campaign for now and if I manage to get the site back up I'm gonna restart it and see if the same thing is happening.
I agree that the use of AdWords won't affect your rankings in Google's organic results. I've seen scores of examples of websites listed as sponsored links, and also in the the top 10 organic results. The most likely explanation for your high rankings in Yahoo!/MSN and your inability to rank in Google is the fact that Google's traffic dwarfs Yahoo!'s and MSN's. Sam
