I have submitted my site into DMOZ but till now no news yet. How can I know whether it got listed or not? If not, can I submit again? Please advise. Thanks
There's a dmoz forum one more click below (youre in the Directories Forum). They do not send notification, but you can enter your URL (minus the http(dot)www:// and see if it is present. Theres a sticky post at the top of the dmoz forum that'll explain why it takes so long... but bottom line it typically does. I've heard people say never resubmit, heard some say ok after 6 months, some say a year. Dont believe there is a definitive answer. Sorry. Either way... if you havent changed the site since it was last submitted I'd guess either it is still in the queue waitning for someone to review it or it has been rejected. Either way resubmitting doesnt really help, so I'd let it go and hope the first one is correct. Good luck ~ Rob
If the site was rejected, and as Rob says, we do not tell people if accepted or rejected, unless the site has changed dramatically it will be a waste doing another submission, it will likely be rejected. If it has not been reviewed, submitting several times again runs the risk of being branded a spammer and also the date stamp of when it was received is changed to the last date submitted and in some areas that can cause a delay, but submitting more than once at best does nothing for your site, because it has not been lost and at worst can delay or even get the site banned. I endorse what Rob said, leave it and see, whatever is wrong with the way you submitted, if its a site we want we will change it, don't worry, we often move sites to new categories, change titles and descriptions.
The only way you can know it got listed is by coming back to the category every day and looking for your site. You can submit your site again and again. Whether that will get you banned or will make you site go to the end of the suggestion queue is something that remains in the unknown. You see, some editors say that you can submit you site several times and nothing will happen. Others say that they will ban you for spamming. Some editors say submitting twice or more is not a good idea because that will overwrite your previous suggestion with the new date. According to other editors there is no queue but a pool where suggestion date may or may not be taken into account. So, there is no way to determine what is right and what is wrong in DMOZ. Most of the time, rules will change to follow editors self interests. If an editor is reluctant to list your site, whatever you do can be a perfect excuse for banning your URL. And that will be approved by the rest of them, most of the time. You don't have to believe what I say. You can take your time in reading this forum and you will see this by yourself. Rob Jones is a former DMOZ editor who still stands with DMOZ crew. Anonymously says he is a DMOZ editor but posts here anonymously so his word can't be trusted at all. I'm not a DMOZ crew fan, so again you don't have to believe me. Just read this and other forums and you will find out.
What good will going to the category do? It impacts not a wit on what the editor can see. It will just frustrate the person doing it. If you read the guidelines you will see that multiple listing is not allowed http://www.dmoz.org/add.html and many of the internal forums have running topics for blocking spammers. Its the submitters choice, but I would have thought it a good idea to read the guidelines if one intends to suggest a site to any directory. We qualify the noton of later sites overwriting the date stamp, by saying that some editors work the suggestions that way. One goes to a category for some reason, finds a load of suggestions, its clear that some have been there for a long time and so one shifts some of the longest, if sites have only been there a few days and others months, then I will try and clear some of the backlog but leave the newer ones, I only dropped into teh category to add an interesting site I had found after all!
It has been already demonstrated that reading the guidelines is not a must for being listed on DMOZ. In the first place, there is a lot of sites listed not meeting any guideline and violating what is supposed to be prohibited. On the other hand, guidelines contradict editors and editors contradict themselves. Who will ever know for sure what is wrong and what isn't. Of course you can ask your self why doesn't DMOZ just tell you if your site is waiting in the queue. So you can save your time and theirs by not submitting again. Instead of just telling you (sometimes) that submitting twice is not allowed. You can ask your self but you can't ask them. You actually can ask them but it is useless. They have already been asked about it and they are trying to explain, yet.
Well you'd have to be pretty desperate to do that, and what if it's been included in a different category to the one you submitted it to? Best to just check your stats every now and again and see if you have a link.
The whole black market dmoz submission reality makes me think google is going to one day look at dmoz the same way it looks at just about every other directory. Just a hunch!
If you want to know if you have been listed then enter the URL, minus http//www, into the search window and it will tell you. But suggesting someone does anything like that on a daily basis is bizarre at best and certainly editors have no knowledge if someone does 1000 times a day.
Hi, I have both my website and blog listed on DMOZ. The website took about 3 months or so to get listed, while the blog may have taken over 6 months. While if I remember correctly, the website was submited once, I've resubmited (sp?) my blog maybe once, twice top, with intervals of months, of course. I've made my best to pick the right category and give a honest description, without "self promoting" bla bla bla. Of course that I've only submited after my blog was probably more than 6 months old and had enough content. Content quality and relevance is important and I want to make sure that my blog has enough quality to be listed there, so I keep doing my best. Have a nice weekend, José
Finally I got approved in DMOZ at http://www.dmoz.org/World/Russian/Общество/Отношения/Свадьба/Видеосъемка/ I think the most important part of this is to keep you Title as close to the domain name of your site...
I have tried to get a legitimate content focused site listed on DMOZ in an appropriate category and haven't had success. For some reason it gets rejected, yet all of the competitors are on their. Idk. These opinions are mine and not representative of any company or person or their thoughts, beliefs or opinions.
I submitted my website finefoodoasis[/URL 14 days ago, but the domain is not matching the Title: German Cafe and Delicatessen. Do you think I will get listed at DMOZ?
Submitting a title other than the one that their guidelines indicate is correct isnt a death knell, just means they'd change it. They are going to review the site to make sure the title and descrip are correct regardless. They re-write titles and descrips to meet guidelines all the time, as will pretty much any decent directory. It's IMO in the submitters interest to send one that works with a simple "accept" click, but surprisingly few actually do it despite pretty thorough instructions on their submission page.
holger: the title you have submitted is perfectly right. I don't see why a DMOZ editor would change it. It's your site's title after all. Of course, you may get confused by answers like the one above. But, for what he writes he didn't take the time to check your site. And just wrote an automated (fit for all / fit for nothing) reply.
ROFL, Thanks fella. I got confused because... * The site's logo says "Tasty & Delicious" with "Helgas Fine Food Oasis" below. * The tab at the top of my browser identifies it (per his own code) as "Tasty and Delicious". * The opening paragraph starts... "Welcome to Tasty & Delicious, Your exiting German Cafe´ and European Delicatessen Shop * The next begins... "At Tasty & Delicious in Browns Bay / Auckland you will get breakfast and lunch, too." * The bottom of the page says "© 2009 Tasty & Delicious, All rights reserved. * The events page says... "Food service provided by "Tasty and Delicious" * Below that... " Tasty & Delicious is providing you with an Original Bavarian Dinner" * Below that... "Tickets are available online, or either at the Shop of Tasty & Delicious, 12 Inverness Rd., Browns Bay. You're right... the name is "German Cafe & European Delicatessen". How'd I miss that? btw - in return for your assistance I sent you some Tasty & Delicious looking rep. Thanks for your help.
