Advise on very popular phpbb forum...

so I administer a very popular messageboard (recently located (this week) to b9board.com so PR is 0, was previously bridge9.com/forum)

Yesterday alone we did 80K pageviews. We have 9000 active users (no this is not unique, but they have all logged in within 6 months)

We sell banner ads that we schedule via phpAdsNew and that has brought in some money, but there is clearly money being left on the table.

I am also hesitent to run Adsense because the memberbase can be somewhat chaotic and don't think there is a snowball's chance in hell that we wouldn't get shutdown from invalid clicking.

Any advice on reaching this site's full potential would be appreciated.

    uh

If that's how you would generalise your memberbase, there aint nothing to monetize.

Well, I wouldn't say the entire memberbase is like that, but it seems like 1 or two bad apples can ruin the bunch when it comes to AdSense.

Maybe I should give it a try first, and see what happens.

What gives you the impression some members would intentionally click on ads?

There are a small handful of users that are somewhat 'mischievous'. Posting disguised links that cause invite popup windows, etc etc

As a whole the community is friendly, but it is also a young community, and teens can sometimes do things that they they will help that actually hurt, etc etc.

I guess we will soon see, since i just added AS to the rotating ads on the site...

I'd be tough about it. I'd ask Google for the IP address of anyone caught doing click fraud on my site. I don't know if Google would give me such data, but my intention would be to ban any user associated with that IP address.

After a few kids are booted from the forums, it will be visible enough that such misdeeds have consequences. When kids see that, they typically realize that what's going on is serious, and they show more respect. Of course, if you get a black-hat uber-hacker with an attitude problem, he's probably going to do damage whether you like it or not. But those people are mercifully rare.
