Advice request: Image database, PHP and hosting

Story so far:

I started a site about 5/6 years ago and it was quite popular until I became so busy that I stopped working on it. Eventually I cleared the site to an absolute minimum of holding page + contact details.

Fast Forward 2 years:

Now that I'm getting it back together I need to show hundreds of photos as a gallery of thumbnails + enlargements and descriptive text. I'd like to be able to have a database (with room for additional databases when I need them), learn PHP, experience the joys of Unix, be able to set-up and control the operation for a reasonable cost and (hopefully) not require too much technical ability to get it sorted (for now at least)

I'd be most grateful for any pointers. Kind thanks in advance

its free and easy to learn and has hacks and mods to suit - one of the best is listingview.php mod where it shows the enlarged picture with a click on list of thumbnails to change the pic.

I use it on the ski france, in my signature, but it can be used for a variety of uses, which you will come to understand. One of the way we will be using it is for recipes but we currnetly use it for boat sales and charter and others have used it for car sales etc.

In fact anywhere that it needs a picture - which is what you want

I know this thread is a little stale, but if you are still looking for a host, as mentioned in this thread I would like to point you to http://phpwebhosting.com/. I have not used them, but in the near future I plan on changing hosts and by reading the site, they pretty much convince me. BTW, anyone who has used them?
