Just so you know, legally web directory paid submissions - or even paying for ANY link on a website, has no value. You can't claim VAT on prices paid for links on websites or directory listings, what you pay is what you pay, out of your own pocket and not the tax man's. So on that front there is nothing Paypal can do, as this guy has no legal claim to the money.

Your neighbour says to you, "I'll give you $10 to cut my hedge", so you say "yeah, no problem". So they hand the $10 over and you never cut the hedge. Where's the legal contract? There isn't one. Bye bye to his claim of royalties.

Nope...not anymore... now you can't brag about your directory even if it's one of the top ten in the world.

That's the sole reason that makes me login to DP these days. But alas! Nothing like old days!

I have already changed my id once for i don't know what reason. I don't know what crept into my mind that i changed my ID to an iPod. Lol... But i definitely remember that Shawn told me that "Dude, think again. It can be done only one time" and i said yes. Now i have to stick with iPod as ID for infinity...i guess

So wrong. A contract does not have to be signed with pen and paper. A contract can be formed by conduct or speech too.

exactly and it is called a verbal contract.
Second, it was done via email so it was written just not signed oo wait whose email address... Signature there.

Lets come back to the original problem of Lance.

I believe what you did was not smart because i am sure you would not bid on his site $75 as your first bid. It was bid fixing just done in a proper way so you have paypal emails to proof. You violated the bid directory contract ofcourse (unknowingly).

Second, the guy is wrong for assuming that you would bid back as your intentions on the first bid was not bid fixing it was promoting your site. He was an idiot to think that a respectable owner like you would fall for it. I think you shall name his site here so we can all know who this person is.

Just an FYI of people who think that this thread is doing harm to the directory industry ... you all are selfish because i can damn sure guarantee if either one of you got in the trouble of this kind ... You would post on DP.

The only thing lance left out was the name of the person ... If he states that then this thread is perfect. Left of google .. if you guys make your directories for people and not for google then google will stop paying so much attention and they will be proven wrong about the fact that each individual directory owner is trying to sell links and rank high in google (manipulating their system) rather than providing a "quality resource to the end-user" or thousands so claim. They are not putting penalties on directories because directory industry is corrupt ... they are putting penalties because it is manipulating their system and making them look like idiots. If you notice it was not just directories who faced the penalty. Anyone who tried to mess with their system got did. Chow's website is not a directory i believe and is a live example in front of you. Cssremix as well.

Now fellows i believe we should sympathize to him or advice him rather than telling him that he is an idiot for making this thread because it can hurt your directories. I believe that when alot of strings are together its a rope and it is hard to blow away a thick rope but when it is one string it can be blown away.

I agree, a verbal agreement is just as binding as a written one. Written contracts are used only because it simplifies proving what the terms of the agreement are should a dispute occur. Just because an agreement is not in writing doesn't mean it can't be enforced, it's just more of a headache to do so. If you sit in on a session of a small claims court you'll see all sorts of verbal agreements being disputed.

OK, well enough people have figured it out and this thread is digressing...

The directory that this is about is http://dollarlinking.ca

If you look at the directory, I am sure that my "story" will make more sense.

    MODS: Please close this thread.

LOL! I think this this thread should remain open because it provides a good look at what happens behind the scenes of bid directories. The fact that other directory owners are getting worried about their profits shouldn't be a reason to close this thread and let it sink into obscurity. This forum isn't about the selfishness of a few directory owners, but the sharing of information for all webmasters.

Ok, I don't care either way. I have absolutely nothing to hide and have laid everything out. Some call for it to close, some don't.

A better statement would be "what happens behind the scenes at SOME bid directories".

All parties are named and the discussion has been had. I really don't care. I know that I run my directory with integrity and honesty, which is why I started this thread to begin with. I needed advice, and have gotten great advice in PMs and this thread which was my ultimate goal.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and lessons learned. :)
