Advice on starting a blog to help me land a 9-5 job.

In addition to lurking around here to try and learn how to make some money with the Internet I am trying to land a 9-5 job in marketing. I am a recent graduate. I started looking in November 2011, I still haven't managed to achieve permanent, full-time success.I am thinking that showcasing a blog would put me ahead of other prospective candidates.

I know that I could always do a generic marketing blog, but I would like to do something with a little more direction. I'm looking for advice on what I should do to help me win a 9-5 job in marketing. I don't know exactly what I want to do in the field of marketing. I am just looking for an opportunity to get my foot in the door somewhere. I know that I do not like the graphic design aspect. Although, I am fairly proficient with InDesign and passable with Photoshop.

Thank you in advance for the help. I know this is sort of a different question to post on this forum.

I'd volunteer to work with small, new businesses and help them with their marketing (either developing the plan, or implementing it) and in exchange you get to use them as a case study. That will show future employers what your vision is like, how good you are at actually doing it - and give them real people they can reference check with.

On top of that the case study companies will use their word of mouth to tell people about the help they are getting and you never know who will get to hear!

Instead of looking for a 9 to 5 marketing job why don't you just create your own marketing company? I am training someone at the moment (one of my coaching clients) in this and its amazing how much more you can earn from your own company if you start from the ground up rather than spending your time working for someone else!

I would start by getting an internet marketing website up, start with a blog and then add your own services to it and then build traffic to it. If you work hard at it you could easily be in profit before Christmas.

You are right, he might earn alot more working for himself, but for anyone that is fresh out of university, gaining some real world experience (for 1-5 years) before starting a company, can give confidence and skills that one cannot simply learn from a course. It might also give him solid references, a portfolio, and even contacts. Just my 2 cents.

OP, sometimes looking for internships can open doors for you.

    Hi Matt,

There is so much you can learn online and the offline world vs online world are so different. If you start by doing the basic things like reselling internet marketing services that is an excellent starting point and a good coach online can help along with lots of reading.

I never worked for anyone else offline and make six figures in my first full year and a lot of it just learning and rinse and repeat but you can learn this just as much by working as a freelancer from home at the same time as building your online business.

That is a brilliant plan on so many levels.

You are creating blogs that showcase your ability to market, which makes you more attractive to a prospective employer.
You are making business contacts that may lead to your employment.
You might be pleasantly surprised when one or more of these businesses INSIST on paying you something.
You begin establishing yourself as the "online marketing" guy in our community, which could turn into a full-time business for you.
You can use the "volunteer jobs" in your portfolio on your own blog.

If you help even one or two small businesses, you would be able to create a blog of your own which showcases your work, could include your resume, and even a sales page offering your services.

    Weight Loss Coach and Matt,

You both bring up some very good points, and I agree with the points that you make. Someday I would love to start my own business either off-line or online. It is definitely a goal of mine.

I agree with Matt. It is probably best for me to gain some real-world experience. As I see it, the business of marketing is business. The more experience I gain in that environment the more successful I think I will be.

I have tried volunteering as a marketer for a local hospital. I have been doing that for about 1 1/2 years. I have enjoyed it tremendously. Unfortunately, other than lines on a resume, it has not led me anywhere.

Plus, for me a 9-5 job serves as a lot more than a source of income. It expands your social circle and gets you out of the house. Plus, I use a power wheelchair, which I definitely think has hurt me during the job search. But, it has almost become a personal goal of mine to persevere and find a 9 to 5 job.

However, it may be that in my case a standard job just isn't in the cards. But I haven't come to that realization yet. With the use of speech recognition software I can be just as productive as a typical individual.

Although my reply was a rambling one, I think it makes the circumstances driving my original post more clear.

I'd recommend writing a blog about something you are passionate about. You will take it more serious, you'll know what you are talking about and it will show in the presentation of the blog if you actually care about it. Regardless of anyones design skill level, their first impression from anything on the web is how it's formatted and designed. Design will create credibility so don't forget about this aspect of your blog. I would look at a few popular blogs and see how they formatted and designed their blog.

Thanks for the tip. I completely agree. I read somewhere that people make up their mind about a website in about the same time it takes to blink your eye, because of this design is crucial.
