Hi, Although I can build basic websites I am no expert and know nothing about servers etc. I have recenty started a php link directory that will compliment my main DIY site. There have been a few problems with the speed of the script on the admin end and my host has suggested that I would be better off with VPS. My directory will have more than 10,000 categories and so I would just like to know some of your opinions as to whether VPS makes sense? Also The VPS uses webmin, but I can upgrade to cpanel for £10 per month and get an additional 128 mb ram installed on the VPS. Does anyone like webmin or should I get the cpanel as well? Thanks in advance chez
I've used both. Webmin is very much for running a Linux box, including the webserver, where cpanel is specifically for managing websites. I like webmin for what it does, though I install OS control panels where a box may be used for many websites. You could do this, or if it is just one site - you'll probably get by. Andy
Trust me, getting a vps wouldnt help much...thats a mammoth number of categories and would require enough time for the mysql queries to be executed on it, to process and display...be it shared or vps, while working on them. phpld is not a resource intensive script in general, its very well optimized and coded. I'd suggest you to trim unnecesary categories.
Thanks for all the replies. My directory is being moved to the VPS once my web host has installed cpanel. The webmin was too difficult to use I'll see how it goes on there and if it does not run too well, I will look at a dedicated server. Thanks again.
