Yes but .co is closer to .com, that's why it's going to be more popular then the other extensions.
Like i said, .com was introduced as "company" but the real company abbreviation is .co
For one less letter you could get something available like "spider.co"

 

.CM also. And what ? I suppose in any case it worth to review these domain name extensions separately.

 

.CM means nothing in the business world.
.CO internationally means "company" since heroin.

.C is already taken by Dennis Ritchie since 1972.

 

you know just because its one letter shorter than .com does not mean anything you do realise that dont you ?

why not go from .me .name and just go all out for .u its shorter bound to be a winner eh

They dont understand that .co is going to be a flop. They will however when they can not sell the domains they horded and the fact the price will barely increase. To be honest im not buying .co domains, so in a way it doesnt matter.

But Im really waiting for the .imsosmart domain extension "Launches 2011" And its going to be bigger than, .co and .com combined, you can pre-reg before landrush @ omfgyouwillbuyanything.com.

from a domain speculating perspective its the very reason the early ccTLD`s are now losing value fast

.cc and .to are classic examples of being close to worthless when undeveloped

 

so how long before .BA comes out? ... or even better ... how about MyDomain.©
AHH .. now there's a sweetheart of an extension.

and IF what you say is true .. IF (BIG IF)... don't you think they'll start rolling out two letter and single letter extensions shortly after, once again saturating the market?

.. and as Iain said .. you are talking about ONE freakin' character here
... .co.uk is VERY, VERY successful for ANY kind .. one of the top extensions in all the world (regardless of its geographical purpose).. also one of the longest... i can't see the amount of characters in an extension being anything more than what it is.. one more character.

And honestly... i can't believe you are basing this charge on the sake of ONE CHARACTER
... things have changed SO much over the years, that some of the tests you are reading MAY have been accurate (about fewer characters) .. but it took a while to make the computer as mainstream as it is today .. typing one more character for grandma rose MIGHT have been something of a nuisance in the early 2000's when she was just gettin' her AOL on ... but so many of us are NOW SO USED to having a computer, or a tablet or a laptop, or a smartphone in our hands that typing is NOT the nuisance it used to be... almost becoming second nature to many of us.

And in closing i will ask you this....
... if you follow future trends and what not ...(don't know if you do)
... but if you may or may not know about BING and Google VOICE really working on and refining their voice recognition and 'buddy' software...
... what happens when we STOP TYPING at all and ONLY use voice for search or navigating the web?
How big a difference will your ONE CHARACTER be then?

 

'co.' being the shorter abbreviation for company does stand a good chance of becoming the favorite for company websites... but it remains to be seen whether and if it is able to surpass the popularity of 'com' tld.
The com name has remained in the minds of people for too long to be displaced easily... I guess! Looking at the fate of all other tlds launched recently... I would prefer to wait for assessing its popularity before committing a premium price to it.

I guess it's all up to big companies - wether they register domain just to protect their name or actually switch over to the new .co extension.
