    Hi!

I'm looking to build a website but have no coding experience. I may want to add an online store at some point as well. Any advice on the best packages out there? Thanks!

There are three ways of looking at it, buy an software " Dreamweaver 8" learn it, then build it., or use an online template based website builder like 'click be' (part of your hosting package) or with a little additional effort use a cms (open source)and build you site according to your needs.
    The choice is yours.

If you have no experience what-so-ever in websites, then get Dreamweaver 8, and use the 'designer' view for building your website; it is much like a text application, and is very user friendly. However, you may need to read the manual, or some online tutorials, so you know how to use the tool to get the desired effect that you want.

A step up from that is purchasing some html and css books and teaching yourself. It would be cheaper, because you can use notepad instead of Dreamweaver, and you would just spend your money on books instead of software. Also, if books aren't your thing, you can use online tutorials from sites such as http://www.pixel2life.com/

Also, to elaborate on what ifyn said, you can always try out CMS's such as Joomla. They provide an easy to use backend, so that you don't need any experience with coding at all to update your site. Also, i'm pretty sure they offer free themes, so that you can customize the way your site looks.

The next step up (and this is a big step) would be to purchase Photoshop CS2 and design the site. Then, code it using valid html/css techniques. This however can take years to learn and to become good at. However the reward of personal satisfaction is priceless.

If none of these seem appealing to you, you can always hire me to make the site for you. Well, I hope this helped you out; it took a good 5 minutes to type :p

Use Wordpress! Wordpress is a GREAT script to use not just for a blog but even a normal website. There are many themes that are available for WP and you can easily add a template to change the look of your site.

Want to customize the template? Look for a template with a layout you like and just edit the CSS of the template (learn CSS at www.w3schools.org) and customize it :D

 you are joking right...well i guess frontpage is good for the ultimate beginner, i suggest you purchase the adobe suite, its quite expensive, but you get all the software required for developing websites, image manipulation...etc.

I always use Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Golive in web design.
Once you have decided in your software, i would pop down the local library and start reading about your software, or even better buy a book. :)

    Dreamweaver - HTML and coding.
    Photoshop - Image editing

Work on both - awesome duo!

Yes, definitly Dreamweaver, thats all i work with nower days, and for image editing etc - i have found that Paint Shop Pro (PSP) is better than Photoshop even though many will disagree but hey....

    Good Luck.

guys, why are u recommending him to use dreamweaver? like he already said, he's a newbie.

i think its the best if u'd tried a (free) cms like Joomla or Wordpress, just go to opensourcecms(dot)com and make your choice.

after u have made ur choice, register in their forums, and u will get all the help u want, and to quick edit a few file(s), small things, u can use crimson editor.

    :)
