Advice needed on selling a domain

    Hi everyone,

I need a little help and advice.

I'm thinking about selling a domain name, i never really got round to promoting it but i think its a decent domain name and would prefer to sell it on.
However, i've never sold a domain name before so i'm clueless on the processes that i need to follow and any addtional costs that i need to know about.

Could someone explain to me how it all happens and what i need to do after the domain name has been sold, ie how to i transfer ownership to the buyer?

    Thanks
    Peter

Make sure there aren't any sneaky little clauses (such as exists with EasySpace) where you have to cough up £50 in order for them to let it go!

Then you need to figure out what sort of price it's worth and what you expect to get (i.e. minimum you will settle for) and find a place to list it. You can sign up at Sedo.com but the average time it takes to sell a good domain is something like 267 days, so don't hold your breath. ;)

Thats a bit sneeky that is, 50 quid is a bit steep.

Ok I've emailed both ukwebsolutionsdirect.co.uk and ipowerweb.com and got one answer so far.

    ukwebsolutionsdirect.co.uk said the following:
To sell/transfer a .uk domain to another individual or company so the domain is in their name you would need to go through Nominets procedure to transfer ownership. More details for this can be found here: http://www.nominet.org.uk/registrants/maintain/transfer/
Doing that means an addtional cost of £30+vat.

ipowerweb.com hasn't replied but was digging around in their control panel and theres an option to change the name, address details (basically all the whois info) So was wondering if its just a matter of changing those details?

Also i've seen people mention a free push....i assume this is transfering it to someone else. How do you do it?

Sorry for being a pain but i've never done this before, and having search google for most of yesterday i cant seem to find much info.

    Thanks
    Peter

It takes a while to figure it all out from scratch.

The basics are that you want to avoid .co.uk domains unless it is either a top-notch name or you plan to use it since they all carry the £30 transfer of ownership fee imposed by the issuing body, Nominet.

A free push - when you register with one of the big domain registrars (much cheaper to reg a domain, btw) and you register a .com, .net, .org, all you need do to transfer a domain to a new owner is 'push it' to their account.

Different registrars have different procedures - with some it's a simple as clicking on a 'push to another account' button while others require you initiate a transfer procedure. None of it is rocket science but it takes a little while to get to know what happens with which registrar.

Most registrars allow you to sign up for a free account - if they don't, perhaps they aren't worth using ;)

    Try;
    Godaddy.com
    Namecheap.com
    Registerfly.com
    Domainsite.com

that should get you kicked off with registrars - all of them have a free account sign up and all allow internal free pushes to another users account.

    :)

    Thanks mcfox

If i transfer them to Namecheap.com would i still need to pay the £30 Nominet transfer of ownership fee if i transfer it to another Namecheap user?

Think i'll transfer the domains over in the end, i know that'll i'll need to pay to transfer them but just seems easier.

    Thanks again
    Peter

There's no point transferring the domains if you don't have to. As far as I am aware, the £30 change of ownership fee will still apply.

Also, be aware that when you transfer a domain (any domain) from one registrar to another, there is a 60 day 'lock in' to that registrar. Most of the time this isn't an issue - you can still push the domain to another user - it's the registrar that the domain gets 'locked' into. So another user would have to use the same registrar - most of the time people do anyway.

You really need to ask yourself if the domains are worth the trouble.

Yeah suppose theres not much point in transferring the domains if i dont have too, but i'm still waiting to here from ipowerweb (i've had a few issues with them so not holding my breath).
Felt it might be easier as i would be selling both domains as part of the same deal.

Thanks alot though, you've been a great help
