I am currently working as a IT network support officer at a local educational institute. I am looking to do a degree in September but i am a little unsure on what i should go for. Like i said i work in network support, but i am also interested in software development.

Which path would you guyz recommend i take, Should i stay in Network support or should i study Software development. Which field would have more opportunities and obviously which pays more.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Well, in my experience, it depends on how far you want to go...

If you want to program, then in my opinon you should shoot for a Computer Science Degree. However, you can find good jobs in programming with a IT Degree, it has been done...

Now, there are probably other degrees that will be accepted by certain places, it just depends on the job, and on the employer.

So you would recommend Programming over Networking.

If you're already doing network support, why get a degree in network support? Seems like it would be money down the drain. If you're interested in development, get a Comp Sci degree, if you decide halfway that you're more interested in support/hardware, then switch to MIS or similar. The first couple years have basically the same requirements.

I would say Software development has got better future than networking. Not only future but better pay also as.I myself is a software engineer and works on J2EE technologies.

It also depends upon ur interest and experience.U mentioned u have already got some experience with networking then why u want to switch to another platform, may b coz u r young.

Ad far as money goes...yea...But with a Computer Science degree, you don;t have to limit yourself to one or the other.

You can do both. Just learn how to divide your time... :)

Dont bump, its against the rules.

If you go down the networking route don't bother with a degree - head straight for the Cisco qualifications (if thats what you want to do).

Network support without the qualifications doesn't pay the best so make sure to get yourself qualified as the years reel in.
